(23,694 posts)My husband had a prostate infection back in his 30s; he had a fever of 103, pain and urinary issues. Two rounds of antibiotics to get it back to normal. It was not pleasant. Fortunately, we were still able to have a successful pregnancy.
BPH causes the prostate to harden and essentially clamp down on the urethra, blocking urinary flow. The older men get, the worse an enlarged prostate becomes. It is subject to malignancy; it makes men have to pee frequently, all night. It is very difficult to cure infections, and they often beome more frequent as men age.
TURP removes the tissue pressing on the urethra thus relieving the pain and urinary issues; basically the surgeon runs a little tool through the urethra and reams out the tissue which restores urinary function. There is some risk of losing sexual function if not done properly; as a result men will often put it off until they just can't stand the pain and other problems any more.
BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy is No Joke, and in all my years of processing medical claims, the diagnosis codes were medical, and had nothing to do with sexual functions. In fact if one came in with that type of diagnosis we would deny it as not medically necessary. Since I was processing Medicare claims all the patients were older
Now, should Viagra and its cousins be allowed post TURP if sexual function is damaged by the surgery? If the patient is a younger man who wants to have children that is one thing. The usage we see advertised on TV are another matter entirely.

For the record, (and it really shouldn't need to be said), pregnancy is not the equivalent of prostate cancer.

(26,540 posts)This is a tit for tat thread about his tweet. Women deserve needed healthcare, as do men. Funny how just talking about not allowing men their needed healthcare gets people all het up, yet thats how womens needed healthcare has been legislated for years.
