A massive heat dome is about to make the Southeast sweat

Remember now there is no climate change.

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/05/23/weather/weather-heat-wave-southeast/index.html

The first heat wave of the season begins Sunday and continues into the workweek for much of the eastern US.

While we're not yet officially in the summer, Mother Nature is playing by her own rules. Over 30 percent of the US population will experience temperatures of at least 90 degrees or higher this week.
"The warm, smothering embrace of a high-amplitude ridge will continue into the long term period," says Kyle Theim, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Atlanta. "Temperatures starting on Monday will run between 10-15 degrees above normal, and border on record maximum temperatures, both for daily highs and lows."

The sad thing is some of the pools won’t be open in some of these areas. Obviously Florida isn’t in this situation as ours are open year round. But some don’t open til Memorial Day at least.

That's just nuts. In my little corner, the average last frost date was 3 days ago. And the risk averse don't put their tomatoes out until next week or the 1st week of June. Crazy weather. I blame Cheetolini and the Repukes. it's a plot, I tell you, a plot!

Is in Central Europe right now. We’re at 66 degrees with a wind chill of about 55.
It has rained 18 days in May when April was cold and dry.
Lows in the 40s, highs in the 60s. Been like that since September. Really weird.
One week in January, one in February and one week in March we had summer temperatures.
My garden is late because it’s so wet and cold.

In Montana, we had five inches of snow on Fri/Sat and was in the 30s for 2 1/2 days, still snowing in the mountains gaining around 21 inches or more. Right now. It was +80F last Thursday. While we are gaining snow where it counts, the river is already high from runoff of what was there before Friday and while it snows up high, it's raining in the lower elevations so that means we could have an extended flood situation in the next few weeks. Right now it's warmed to a toasty +41F but rain will be with us through the week as it warms into the 60s/790s.

The ranch land that lay low along the rivers and streams will be affected for some time. But we've been dry for years, didn't get any precip to speak of all winter so this is what will assist us in having a later start to our fire season. We're due to burn down all summer so the rain is welcome but unless it rains regularly all summer, we're going to have a smoky summer.

It's a wild sort of landscape with weather to match, you take what Mother nature gives you and make it work for you. A lot of new to the landscape folks will have a hard time, the rest of us are used to it.

Since the limit to how far the "look back" for "historical" reference is only ten years, we've been in long term drought longer than that, people forget what it was like only a few years beyond that. It could be snowing into June, easily. Many of the Forest Service roads that provide access to many vacation spots don't open until Memorial day for lower elevations and sometime in June for the high country.

I'm annoyed, as most are, because life and gardening is delayed because of it. We're in the muddy season right now, accompanied by some freezing temps that can last for days. There were several days of warning put out to the gp on all media that they need to get out of the back country and stay off the rivers and away from streams that can quickly flash flood. The tourist season is already on so there are several sets of inexperienced people already out there, especially on the rivers.

I was out on the gravel bars on the river last week before the river rise but the river is up in the grass now so can't go there for weeks. I like that the runoff is so powerful that it moves the gravel bars around ever year. It's a great place to look for cool rocks and petrified wood and it all gets rearranged during the flooding so it's new stock every year!

I have indoor stuff to deal with so I am good with staying in the house for now.

I hope this isn't an indicator of what the summer is going to be like, because i really hate the heat and humidity.

I finally had to close my balcony door this weekend and turn on the AC, which is going to more than double my electric bill every month from now until Oct, but I can't be without it.

On the upside, my allergies have greatly improved by not being exposed to the fresh air. It seems to be really bad this year.

For a week or more, here in central SC. Only 92 today.

I know that a lot of people around here don't have air conditioning. Mostly, they are poor. The folks living in the city may have some options. There are public buildings, and the city sometimes opens 'cooling shelters' for the homeless.

It's been hotter "up north" as they say. We're going to have a drastic cool down mid-week (one day in the 60's), and I'm thrilled. I can't work in my gardens right now without melting from heat and humidity.

It sounds like as it moves east, it's going to be hotter. Ugh, although some love the heat!

Weeks and weeks of cataract surgery. The part they never tell you is that you have to wait at least a month between the first and the 2nd one, during which you cannot see clearly if you have astigmatism.
And shortage of needed staff b/c Covid added to delay because of my idiot red state response.

But now I can see well enuff to read and write, thanks to the computer.

Normally we are in the 90’s by now with the rains don’t really start till June. I work in Landscaping and have for more than 30 years. In my mind May is the worst month. But not this year. Mainly in the low to mid 80’s with one hell of a breeze. Has kept us off the water because even in a bay 20mph winds are not fun on a 22 foot bay boat.

But we revert to normal this week. Mid 90’s and little rain.

Once our rains start up the temps will lower to around the high 80’s or low nineties. The humidity? That another story. But I’m originally from Louisiana. That’s a special kind of heat and humidity Florida can’t compete with.

But to tomorrow the wife and I are hitting the gulf to catch some trout and reds.
