Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsA new talking point/slogan just occurred to me, regarding the GOP and January 6th
Why don't Republicans want a January 6th commission?
They don't want to get to the bottom of it because THEY are AT the bottom of it.
(Capitalization for verbal emphasis.)
Optional:
They don't want to get to the bottom of it because they're ALREADY AT the bottom of it.

If(as the insurrectionist in chief said) it were Antifa and BLM, they'd be more enthusiastic than boy scouts.

(90,130 posts)The GOP doesn't want to be talking about it?
FINE!
Then that's ALL that WE should be talking about - NONSTOP! From morning-to-NEXT-morning, and repeat! ALL THE WAY through 2022! And REPEAT. BECAUSE it's necessary!

(90,130 posts)SOMETIMES I think I come up with a good, catchy, hopefully memorable talking point. My daddy was a salesman. A rather effective one. Especially with sloganeering.
One of his local ad campaigns, when he and a longtime friend had a furniture and appliance store: "Those two crazy Irishmen have done it again!" And it sure worked!

(12,536 posts)McCarthy was for the commission before he was against it. Interestingly, his reversal followed Liz Cheney's interview where she stated that McCarthy should be called to testify under oath what he knew and when he knew it.
The Republican (Party?) is complicit in the January 6th debacle. Which is why they do not want an investigation spoiling their plans for 2022 and beyond.
The GOP is not a loyal opposition. They are seditionists.

(90,130 posts)Positive, or in this case negative inspiration.
Positive - inspiration toward encouraging, promoting, and activating much-needed change for the better. Reinforcement of what works or benefits the greater good, not just a lucky/wealthy/well-connected few.
Negative - firing up activists who can MAKE that change. Removal of the bad or destructive element so the greater good can prevail and be strengthened, enhanced, and extended. Seeking or gaining justice upon the wrongdoers.
Sounds kinda like a yin/yang type of thing. One is about attracting, the other is about repelling. One is about embracing, the other is about defeating.

(90,130 posts)Remember, my friends, we are dealing with a packed house for Short Attention-Span Theater! They need reminding (unless they're already kinda in on it and want the support and will appreciate your having their backs).
That's why repetition and lots of reminding are so valuable, and such effective tools for messaging - to anyone with whom you work, play, study, carpool, gossip, garden, Zoom, tinker, walk, shop, cook, work out, watch kids, go to church, live near, fill-in-the-verb-here, etc.
It's not ONLY the clever, quick-hit message.
It's also HOW it's delivered, AND how often, (like constantly, relentlessly, as often as possible!)
Who. Check.
Where. Check.
What. Check.
How. Check.
When. Check.
Why. Check.
All the various angles covered. All the key questions answered.

(90,130 posts)"They don't want to get to the bottom of the insurrection because they already ARE at the bottom of the insurrection."
A key phrase repeats. "...the bottom of the insurrection." Double-punches it. Underlines it. Sets it apart so it stands out - it catches the eye more quickly and makes the impression first. And psychologists have said that first impressions are lasting. First impressions have the last word.

(90,130 posts)this can be considered just "taking their temperature." Looking for some sort of version of "normal." Which we're not apt to find much of, over on that side of the aisle. But they have to face (and preferably pass) that test before we go any further with 'em.
And if they don't pass? Then you know EXACTLY what you're dealing with - and you already know it isn't good.

(2,398 posts)The Republican party is now the Anti-Democracy party. They are now clearly anti-democracy and pro-authoritarian.
How to articulate that and make it stick?
For example, the anti-abortion movement knocked it out of the park with pro-life and pro-abortion. That language fundamentally changed the playing field.
Who is not pro-life? Who is actually pro-abortion?
So, how do we do the same thing to them? They are against everything hold most dear.
Any suggestions on how to weaponize the language we use to talk about these evil, corrupt, disloyal bastards?

(90,130 posts)Thank you for weighing in, here.
I think some of the most important tools we have to fight with are talking points, sloganeering and messaging. And I think we have to get good at it, FAST!
We're dealing with Short Attention-Span Theater. That's the arena we have to fight in, every day. Dumbed down; don't like to read much; prefer to get their "news" from slick, splashy-packaged presentations with a lot of sparkle, pizazz, bright colors and bursts, special effects and animation, loud urgent musical punctuation, the booming, excitable (usually) male voiceover, logos and labeling and other visuals that attract the eye and hold it. And LOTS of red-white-and-blue - the bigger the better. Reagan used to appear in front of a backdrop that consisted of a HUGE American flag, in photos looking like it was 30-feet tall. And the cameras would be set up BELOW, so they were looking up at him. trump knows that trick. He knows ALL these tricks. Look at how trump Tower is all glitzed out - shiny, slick reflective surfaces, and lots of gold all over the place.
Remember: the eye is always drawn toward the "shiny object." Literally and figuratively. That's why everybody loves rainbows and 4th of July fireworks, diamonds are a girl's best friend, and "blondes have more fun." (No wonder trump has hit the yellow hair-dye probably on a daily basis.) Besides, research suggests that a majority of Americans process information visually.
