She got right in the middle of it and pulled one knife-wielding student off of a fellow student he had pinned to the ground. She then managed to move the student with the knife to another area, calmed him down down, and got him to turn over the knife.
She didn't have a gun and didn't have to shoot anyone.
Teachers across the country probably do this every week. So please spare us "the cop had to shoot to kill because s/he posed a deadly threat and the only way to stop them was to shoot them on the spot" justifications for police killing Black civilians.

(145,667 posts)I am glad that she was able to defuse this situation
There was no reason for the police to shoot and kill that young lady just because she had a knife

(14,964 posts)I'd hope she would have any emotional support from professionals she might need provided to her.
Brave niece!
Oooos, and a gentle hugs to you.

(18,486 posts)She felt the student has been triggered and got freaked out and she was glad she was there to make sure this didn't escalate. She's also glad the police weren't called and weren't involved because she's sure this would have ended very differently.
She's fine. Thanks for being concerned.

(14,964 posts)...and physical, and emotional strength to take care of it. No calling the police which is I think is even iffier these days.
Many years ago (thank goodness no weapons) one brawl broke out right near me on the street (sidewalk), and second came sort of careening towards me in a moving subway car to where I ended up stuck in a corner. Luckily we quite soon arrived at a stop, and I safely dashed out! No echoes of upset thinking about it now.
So yeah, I usually pay attention when difficult things happen... (even before those experiences)
Best to you both.

She knows the kids and the situation, so she more'n likely knew how best to handle it, but to those of us who grew up with schools with no knife fights in the classrooms (we waited until school was out) it's pretty scary.

(6,559 posts)... and you are right. It happens more often than you think. Police intervention techniques are woefully inadequate. I support adding community support services to our law enforcement agencies.
