About to have my wisdom teeth removed

I’m 54 and was supposed to have it done 36 years ago. They came in but are affecting the neighboring teeth and I finally made an appointment. I’m really scared right now and there is no turning back. Waiting in the lobby to be called in.

Just an old wimp here and I’m wishing I had decided to not do this.

Wish me luck

I had all mine removed young at age 14.

It was fine. A few years ago I did get a cyst
where one had been, but the oral surgeon
fixed it fine too.

Do what the good doc tells you to do and it’ll be fine. Let us know how it goes.

You won't feel any wiser after it's done though.

I had it done in my 30s and didn't feel a thing. Then a few days later was in great pain. Got infected, dry socket, and that hurt.

They gave me the instructions but I was really still out so didn't remember them at all, brushed my teeth after a nap when I got home and got dry sockets. Ouch! You do not want that pain and it's very easily prevented if you just avoid the things I listed above.

but one you heal it's much better once it is done.

I have a huge phobia of dentists, since when I was a kid (I'm also 54), my pediatric dentist didn't believe children felt pain the same way as adults, thus, extractions were done without benefit of pain relief. My DH (58) had a similar dentist, leading to him having a fear of them too.

The point is that dentists are much more aware of pain and people's comfort these days.....and that in the 70's in Wisconsin apparently there were sadists working in children's dentistry.

Good luck, hope you recover quickly.

They put me under, and I had six stitches in each socket. They were a mess. I had no pain or swelling, didn’t even take the pain meds they sent me home with. I slept most of the day because of the anesthetic. Got up the next morning and was noshing on potato chips when a friend dropped by with a big vat of soup. I told her I wanted a taco. 😂 The stitches dissolved on their own. The worst part was my terror at being put under for the first time in my life.

to withstand and recover from now than it was when you were younger. I’m impressed by the advances in dental medicine.

On the pain management front, both my dentist and an oral surgeon I’ve gone to both recommend alternating ibuprofen and Tylenol every few hours, rather than prescribing heavier drugs. Apparently there’s quite a bit of data that suggests this is not only safer but also more effective for dental pain. And I have to say, after trying this following numerous procedures, I absolutely believe in this method now. It works well for me. (But of course, listen to your own provider!)

Best of luck. Take it easy for a couple of days. You’ll be fine, and you’ll be glad you did it.

Then take as prescribed. Every four hours ect. Do that for the first 24 hours. Then as needed. Its easier to maintain Pain management before it starts hurting.

He only needed three removed because a molar failure allowed one to slip in as a replacement.

He was terrified, so much so they had some trouble setting the IV. But persistence paid off and he was out. It all went very quickly. When he woke up he asked (in a rather annoyed voice) "when are they going to do this already so I can go home?" and was surprised to learn it was already done.

Take care, be well, and wish you the best.
