(24,186 posts)Amazon thinks they're the best at running businesses, that's what they think their core competency is, management capability. Unless there are strong synergies between different divisions of the conglomerate, they are doomed to fail. I don't see strong synergies between their websites, delivery system for products, and a motion picture studio. This weakens Amazon.

(37,350 posts)They are producing original content to get subscribers. This expands it's library. He probably overpaid for what is mostly old movies though.

(34,189 posts)I was watching SG1, had finished Universe, and on Season 3 of Atlantis which Prime removed them all with no warning. Netflix right now has SG1 so I'm continuing it, but Atlantis is only on Prime if I pay extra for it. Since I never got the chance to watch all of Atlantis, I'm pretty bummed. It's be great if Prime could bring back all of them and the new series that is being talked about.

(7,654 posts)you should kind of think of Season 4 and 5 as self contained single seasons. Somewhat different from the first three and each other, but still pretty good.

(29,346 posts)MGM both produces TV/film, which Amazon can use for their own service as well as other services (MGM produces one of rival Hulu's flagship series, The Handmaid's Tale) and also has a huge library which presumably will synergize with Amazon's streaming services.

(24,186 posts)This is throwing good money after bad. Don't get me wrong, I like Amazon Prime streaming and use it, but it's a classic case of a gigantic corporation thinking losses don't matter because the parent company is still making money.

(4,533 posts)Amazon knows that the ultimate market will generate huge profits. They will pay billions now to create a long lasting seven percent of the ultimate global market. I lived with a movie and cable tv executive who greatly admired the repulsive Rupert Murdoch because in the seventies he was wisely willing tooverpay to expand his empire. She said he alone among his competitors knew that buying a piece of the future was worth almost any price. And it worked for him.

(8,178 posts)My first reaction to the header is "Wow". Holy smokes, that's a big buy.
But I've been noticing a plethora of new studios associated with good films recently. MGM has a lot of great old films in the vault, suggesting to me the possibility of being able to view on my prime account which I happen to appreciate.
So long as Prime remains affordable on the Senior discount rates for low income Seniors like me, I appreciate being able to access films too costly for me to view otherwise.
Currently haven't quite made the decision to pull the plug on Netflix as I'm not a fan of a lot of their offerings in recent years; but then they come up with something that makes it worth continuing my subscription for another billing cycle.
Not sure about World Dominance though...

One movie studio just pushed them into a media market maker?
Walmart on steroids?
Last year Walmart revenues were higher than Amazon ($559B for Walmart and Amazon up 38% to $386B). Market analysts expect Amazon to take the lead from Walmart in 2025. Seems like competition is in place. Walmart has kicked their e-commerce game into high gear. I sell on and buy from both platforms. Walmart is kicking ass and so is Amazon.
I cannot imagine getting through the pandemic without either firm. FedEx and UPS performed heroically too. Supply chains held together and adapted quickly. There is an element here that thinks all businesses are evil. Sure, lets crave it up like a Thanksgiving turkey based on incorrect information.
