has been named as the shooter behind the early morning massacre at a Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) yard in San Jose on May 26. He was an employee at the yard, police have confirmed.
The shooting was sparked by "a workplace issue", officials claimed, adding that the gunman set fire to his own house before driving to the VTA yard and opening fire. Police have not yet publicly linked the arson call to the shooting.
A number of weapons and "hundreds of rounds of ammunition" were found inside his home, the sources said.

(16,646 posts)Many enthusiasts will often have "hundreds" of rounds at any one time, not to mention more than one gun. Quite honestly, it wouldn't be unusual for them to have a self loader and therefor the materials for loading them including powder. The more telling piece of information would be how they were stored. We talking in a gun safe, or ammo locker? Or are we talking under the floor boards?

(9,998 posts)The fact that we're a nation that's had over 200 MASS SHOOTINGS so far this year, and we're only in May.
So sad that we'll NEVER learn or do a thing to change the course the country has taken.
We're a fucking Pathetic country. But thank god we can have our guns and ammunition. That's what's important.

(7,295 posts)So I'm not impressed by the "hundreds of rounds." But I do think firearms are grossly underregulated in this country.

(9,998 posts)I'm sure their statement was meant to indicate that he had one small box of ammunition. Makes sense.

(16,646 posts)Unfortunately, most likely the reporter was simply writing what they were told, frequently by a spokesman who doesn't know details either. A "few hundred rounds" becomes "hundreds of rounds". As I say, I'm far more interested in how and where they were found and how they were acquired.

(7,295 posts)I'm not a huge shooter, but I like to remain proficient with the guns I have. I shoot about 500 rounds a year for several different guns (one modern and number of antiques). That is, until ammo prices went through the roof.

(16,646 posts)probably aren't storing it inside floor boards. Furthermore, I presume you have no plans to kill innocent people. We need to focus upon behavior that correlates to actual acts of violence.

(7,295 posts)I agree. We need to focus on behaviors not alarmist headlines.

Claims me as chattel.
Sometimes I find half digested guns in his poop.

Awkward.
Pissed off my Catholic Guardian Angel immensely. Guardian Angel thinks suffering is good for my soul, and oh how he watched me suffer.

(19,977 posts)he was a "good guy with a gun," right? I mean, yesterday he had no record of shooting anybody so it was okay for this "good guy" to keep buying up deadly weapons and ammunition until his house was full of them, right?

(11,736 posts)Yesterday he was a guy who had guns. Neither good nor bad and possibly both. Something led him to make a decision to engage in violence against his co-workers. He had access to firearms which certainly facilitates a person's confidence that they can commit acts of violence and inflict a lot of damage. I would be willing to wager a substantial amount that there are an EXTREMELY SMALL amount of people who are functioning perfectly in society that just one day decide, "You know, I am going to go to .... and shoot a bunch of people." I have personally been in some rather low periods of my life, to the point where the idea of "if I happen to fall asleep and not wake up, I wouldn't mind". Never ever thinking of doing anything active. NEVER EVER EVER though of doing anything to hurt anyone. The thing is that life is difficult and things change and sometimes crises happen. Some people are resilient. Some are not. Some are introspective and inwardly focused. Some are outwardly focused. There are typically warning signs but people are worried about intruding into privacy or liability issues.
"Good guy with a gun" is a caricature of a position that is typically a right wing position which unfortunately has been also used by liberal or left leaning firearms owners as well.
There are people who own firearms who would never think to use them to commit violence. There are people who own firearms who would not ever use them to hurt anyone except in self defense. There are people who while they have not broken any laws, may be emotionally unstable and might see their firearms as a tool with which they could "take back their power" or "hurt those who hurt me". The difficulty is that there is not a clear cut way of distinguishing between those types of people.
Responses to that problem need to be comprehensive. There has to be a way to reduce the sheer number of firearms available. There has to be better ways to distinguish between the type of person who can safely own a firearm, and the type who cannot. There has to be ways to diminish the likelihood of people getting to the point where they see inflicting harm on others as a viable path. That would entail a better understanding of motivations, and of factors that facilitate violence itself. These are things that are difficult, but can be accomplished if people have the political and social will to do so.
