(2,574 posts)Their motivation for doing what they are doing is not based in stupidity, or ignorance of the effects that their actions are going to have on the Democratic party, democracy in the US, and the maintenance of freedom and the rule of law in the US.
That's a "special kind of stupid". It's not clear what the reward for this type of behavior is, but it must be substantial if they are willing to bring down democracy and freedom in the most powerful nation on earth.
This goes far beyond mere "strong opinions", unless they have lost connection with reality on a par with the degree that Trump worshipers and QAnon have lost themselves.
However, if this is a a political ploy to force Republicans to show that they are absolutely 100% against passing any meaningful legislation that is beneficial to the US, and will ride in on a white horse to pass President Biden's infrastructure bill and the For The People Act, well then, that's completely logical and honorable.
If it is not the aforementioned political ploy, then Manchin and Sinema will go down in history with other heroes of authoritarian fascism, and nations that remain democratic after the US becomes a totalitarian fascist dictatorship under the Orange Fuhrer will revile them as such.

(13,235 posts)By trying to appease them and play both sides, they are selling out their Democratic constituents who actually voted for them. Given current circumstances, they are also selling out their country. If they dont wise up soon, there could very well not even be a democracy for them to serve in .

(28,836 posts)That's not how it works. Congresspeople represent *all* of their constituents, not just the ones who agree with us. In WV, we are the vast, vast minority.
I find it amusing that people constantly (and justifiably) complain about the GOP ruling through minority rule thanks to the electoral college and some silly Senate rules. But when we're the minority, it's apparently perfectly OK.

(13,235 posts)However, if a senator is a member of a political party, they have some level of responsibility to support the party platform and what it stands for, particularly when so much is at stake. What we are currently experiencing is an existential threat to our democracy and not just a mere difference of opinion. Im not sure how your mention of minority rule fits in with my comments.

(6,991 posts)You know, I have friends in Az., and one of them told me that he'd rather have Sinema in there than McSally. I replied, yeah I get that because McSally is a clown and not very pro-military although she was in the military herself. Anyway, I distinctively remember telling him that Sinema's a former Greenie, and you know how they are and how they think. He said, Sinema may be a former Greenie, but she'll do the right thing for the party.
Here we are 1 year or so later, and my friend is mad as hell. Her numbers are cratering so we'll see if she's primaried next time around, because she's shown her true colors as a DEM in name ONLY..

(10,867 posts)Forget the primaries. It would not shock me to see her jump over to the other side in order to get re-elected when the time comes. Az Republicans should be starting to like her by now.
