Thank you!
Democrats in the Texas Legislature staged a dramatic, late-night walkout on Sunday night to force the failure of a sweeping Republican overhaul of state election laws. The move, which deprived the state House of Representatives of the minimum number of lawmakers required for a vote before a midnight deadline, was a stunning setback for state Republicans who had made a new voting law one of their top priorities.
The effort is not entirely dead, however. Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, indicated that he would call a special session of the Legislature, which could start as early as June 1, or Tuesday, to restart the process. The governor has said that he strongly supported an election bill, and he was widely expected to sign whatever measure Republicans passed.
Election Integrity & Bail Reform were emergency items for this legislative session, Mr. Abbott said on Twitter on Sunday night. They will be added to the special session agenda. He did not specify when the session would start.
While Republicans would still be favored to pass a bill in a special session, the unexpected turn of events on Sunday presents a new hurdle in their push to enact a far-reaching election law that would install some of the most rigid voting restrictions in the country and cement the state as one of the hardest in which to cast a ballot.

(86,943 posts)It was the early 90s and the Dems left the state and the reps broke the law sending feds after them. I thought they went to Arkansas, but I could be mistaken.
But I think it was about redistricting at that time.

(54,506 posts)5.25 MILLION of us voted for Biden/Harris last year.
Yeah, it wasn't enough to win our electoral votes, but we were hardly MIA. There is a very good reason the TX Republicans are so desperate to pass a law making it difficult for us to vote. If they didn't consider us a danger to their winning streak, they wouldn't spend the time on this effort to suppress our votes.

(18,486 posts)And what happened in Texas can't necessarily happen everywhere. This was a very unique lightning in a bottle moment unique to Texas because of the way its legislature operates (for example, it meets only a few months a year so walking out and denying a quorum can cause a significant delay but wouldn't have much impact in most states).
Democrats are "getting busy" and fighting with all the tools they have all o we the country, including in DC.

Please be specific and state the exact steps they should take within the rules and the law and explain just how that will stop the "clusterfucks."

(58,785 posts)Many thousands of people who chose our government and/or judiciary as their life's work, because they've always cared tremendously about it, are now front-line warriors in a giant existential battle to save it.
If you started learning right now what they were doing in even one state, the "getting busy," you would still be at it this time tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day.

(22,292 posts)in our city. Rep Chris Turner is the Minority Chair and Nicole Collier is the Chair of the Black Caucus.; Ramon Romero is our third Democrat and is a real fighter.
I am really proud of all of them for doing this.
I will remain angry for years at any Democrat in this state who did not vote or who only voted the top line and did not go down ballot and get rid of some of these Republicans.
If we had gained the majority this would not be happening and we would be able to manage the redistricting coming up .
