(61,912 posts)we don't like to learn from the past. We react to fear. Propaganda works on us.
Not all of us, of course - but we as a species have some fatal flaws, which is why we continue to repeat our problems again and again and again.
I am under no guise that we are anything better than that - all I can do is to be what I would like others to be - but mostly just appreciate my wife and daughters - and try to not expect very much from very many others.

(13,517 posts)as Americans. We, thankfully are not. We definitely have our own assholes but luckily they are a very small percentage of the population. They too, have decided, since Trump, they can flex their assholery but it is just not accepted here and is shut down pretty quickly.

(21,032 posts)We are in the same time and space as the US but Canada & Australia are a million miles from what is happening there. Sure we have our own RW nutcases but there is no comparison.
The current situation seems to be peculiar to the USA. I have my own ideas why.

(29,082 posts)My area starts evicting people by the end of the month. 82K and rising. I read landlords think they will be better to go AirB&B. I am sick at the numbers.

Encouraged to think empathy is for p*$sies. Told rage is justified. Taught that real masculinity is macho and violent.
Dangerous, dangerous stuff.

(16,903 posts)The Governor of our province showed up at our door at 9 oclock last week. My daughter opened the door. The Governor said to her I humble myself before you for how you were treated at the airport last month. (They had taken her aside and asked questions etc). The Gov gave my daughter her private WhatsApp number if she ever had any trouble again.
Everyone here wears a mask, says good morning etc.
I love the Caribbean. I will never move back.
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
