The Kroger supermarket in Yorktown, Va., is in a county where mask wearing can be casual at best. Yet for months, the store urged patrons to cover their noses and mouths, and almost everyone complied.
People dont like to wear masks here, said Janet Wainwright, a meat cutter at the store, but very few people would go without it.
That changed in mid-May after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised vaccinated Americans that they could go maskless in most indoor settings. The next week, the store told employees that they could no longer ask customers to cover their faces. So mask use plummeted, and the anxiety of Ms. Wainwright and other workers shot up.
We just feel like were sitting ducks, said Ms. Wainwright, who estimated that far fewer than half of patrons wore masks on a recent Sunday. Now its just a free-for-all.

(2,234 posts)Here in Ohio, in every Kroger store Ive been to in the past year virtually all the customers have been masked and less than half of the employees. And for the past couple weeks, with restrictions being eased, still almost all customers are masked, but every employee is unmasked.
In theory, I want to support grocery workers, but in reality, they have consistently been much more of a threat to customers than the other way around.

(3,373 posts)If so, they have little to worry about. If not, go get vaccinated. Did people expect mask wearing to last forever?

(37,182 posts)That's their best protection, not masks.
Mandating that people wear masks cuts down on the number of customers in stores and overall economic activity. We have to re-open and get back to normal or else it will become too difficult to do so.

(9,173 posts)employees were often less compliant than customers in stores and businesses. I'm talking at the height of the pandemic last fall and winter--employee dick-noses and chin straps on the workers ringing me up at Lowes, Walmart, small businesses.
