that the Repugs are systematically destroying our democracy.
From the Big Lie that the former guy foisted on us. To the 1/6 Capitol Insurrection. To the voter suppression activities that are going on across the country. To the gerrymandering to manipulate the upcoming elections to the Repug advantage. To the support being given by Repugs - both in and out of office - to encourage the overthrow of the government. To the obstruction of progress in correcting the insanity left over from the former guy's administration by McCarthy and McConnell. To the far, far right crazies that are running around the country firing up the MAGA's and telling them the former guy is the rightful leader and will be re-instated come August.
The talking heads - employed by MSNBC & CNN - tell us what's happening on a day-to-day basis. They know that this government is being systematically being destroyed by the Repug Party - and all they can do is tell us this is happening - and they along with our Dems in the House, Senate & White House - are helpless to prevent or stop this from happening.
This helplessness is turning into hopelessness.
Then my thoughts turn to the Repugs. Those in office and those out in the country that vote these people into office.
Are they blind to all of these goings on? Are there not some 'real Patriots' out there that realize what their Party is doing and can put a stop this craziness from within their Party?
Are there not any Repugs out there that still believe in Democracy? Where are they?
Even Romney, Murkowski, Liz Cheney go only so far and then they seem to back off.
Are all Repugs just going to step aside and let this destruction continue until it's too late?

(58,785 posts)It is their business to fill 24/7 with endless talk, so that may be where the misapprehension is coming from. A lot that is discussed in seemingly endless repetition is scary.
As for conservatives, registered Republican or otherwise, who believe in democracy, again just look to CNN and MSNBC for a quick answer. Both employ a bunch of conservatives who are sounding the alarm and reporting on the threats to our democracy all day every day.

(12,463 posts)Because the conservative belief system is hierarchical and based on unequality. Conservatism and capitalism carry the roots of authoritarian ism built into it.
They will let this country go authoritarian because of their beliefs.
Some beliefs are wrong and dangerous and should be torn apart to save democracy .
Conservatives hate democracy because they believe they are better than everyone else.
Republicans are the sociopath party and has always catered to sociopaths, narcissists and authoritarians.

(36,457 posts)I have 2 republican "friends" that I used to work with and we became work friends. 2 out of the three of us no longer work there. So we would occasionally get together for brunch. we just never mentioned anything political. But now, after not seeing them for over a year because of the pandemic, one of them has texted and emailed me about getting together. I replied by saying something to the effect of "there are still too many crazies out there" in an attempt to delay any meeting and she replied that there are always going to be crazies out there. I am sort of conflicted about meeting up with them. They are both nice women. But how can we meet and never talk of such things as the January 6 insurrection? never talk about trump's lies? These things are too big to not talk about (IMO).
I don't really know what to do. I sometimes think I should just ask them about Jan 6 and see what they say. If I lose their friendship then .... so be it. I am not good at arguing/debating with people.
