A military veteran’s microphone was muted midway through his Memorial Day keynote address after he started talking about the Black history of the commemoration

An organizer for the event said his mic was muted because his comments were “not relevant”

“This is not the same country I fought for,” says Lt Col (ret) Barnard Kemter after the organizers of an Ohio Memorial Day event turned off his mic when they didn’t like his speech, which discussed the role of freed slaves in the origins of Memorial Day /1

Veteran's microphone cut off when he discusses Black people's role in establishing Memorial Day

Take the time listen to Kemter’s full speech, which is full of many relevant history lessons on union and sacrifice and what that sacrifice was all meant to buy.

Imagine being so far gone in partisan madness as to censor this speech about our nation /2

I always wondered why conservatives had to create a whole new sacred cow status, which they called "Gold Star families." As I understand it, they are families who have lost a loved one in time of war. The concept is that they should be allowed full freedom to speak their minds because they are dealing with grief that is unimaginable to the rest of us, unless we share that same experience. So, they're allowed to lash out and no one is supposed to criticize them.

The need to create a protected status is very revealing about conservatives. First, anyone who loses a loved one deserves space. It's just common sense that you allow them to express themselves in whatever means they need to find closure. Because conservatives had to create a special category to protect survivors of soldiers who died in war, it goes to show how they gamed the situation in the first place, to eliminate criticism for the fool-hardy decisions they put this country through. And second, we're Americans. We have the right to free speech and conservatives are egregiously wrong to put up hurdles, like they do every time they take this country to war. It is really American on their part.

So, now we take it to the next step. We're not in wartime and they don't have a situation to use against someone's right to free speech, so they cut the mike. It's obvious that conservatives can't take criticism.

Not sure what you are trying to say; Gold Star families go back to WW I. Speech was/is not an issue.

Something changed. I was raised on a military base and I never heard of the term before the GWBII era.

"Gold star families" has been around since at least WW2, maybe WW1. The "let them speak" bit is of more recent vintage (but mainly when it's something RWers are pushing. It's ok for RWers to dunk on someone saying things they don't like, like the Khans.

But I'll take your word for it. It sounds like the right-wing resurrected it during the GWBII days, and made that connection with the freedom to speak, without fear of reprisal. Because, before that, they would vilify anyone who spoke against their right-wing supported wars. I'm guessing that even their own people were speaking up, and they stepped in to give them a pass.

gave the clowns that muted the mike all the acceptance a racist nature needs to openly, proudly spout, and use their racism from among the 70million strong trump insurrectionist stinking rabble. Their hypocrisy stinks to high heaven. And the smell is so strong whoever he/she is they are holding their nose when turning to look after this planet, in this galaxy, universe They want blacks put back under their foot or knee. So what can be expected from a terribly divided nation on the subjects of race and racism in history and the present?

Ohio is trump territory.

This outrageous whitewash of history smears every gallant and noble act or instinct from the freed slaves right through to AAs honouring the military that deserves honour today. Just a putrid move on the part of those bigots.
