1. My Mom and Dad

were on a State-sponsored visit while all this was going on. (He was a prof of city planning at NYU... but the exact purpose of the trip has been lost, by our family, to history)

They had no idea all this was going on, except that the itinerary changed. (My sister and I were kinda freaking out at home in the US.) We found out later that all other foreign visitors were confined to their hotels, while my folks trip continued with it's altered plans.

And generally Chinese people avoid talking about the 3 T's: Tiananmen, Tibet, Taiwan.
