Sort of how a narcissist or a sociopath or a cult leader presents normally at first..."I'll protect you, it'll be so great. Only I can solve your problems for you you just have to follow me and everything will turn out great..." Act normal to get in the door, and once inside that's when stuff goes sideways.

Everyone expected former guy to pivot, and he never did. I believe most people on 1/6 were primarily expecting just a loud exterior protest for the cameras for news coverage, and didn't imagine they'd actually breach and go running down the halls howling for congress members' heads and smashing the place.

TL;DR - expectations were set: the right always complain about how the left has "violent" protests and people assumed that would be a factor, when in reality the right-wing groups were there to cause actual trouble the former guy implied with a wink and a nudge to avoid culpability.
