The firm said the partner didn't receive firm authorization for the suit and the firm is withdrawing as local counsel.

Non-lawyers may not understand how weird this is. Partners at big law firms do not take significant cases like this without approvalit can harm the business, tarnish the firm, and drag the other partners' reputations down with it (as you can see w/ the reaction already)

(115,831 posts)Barnes & Thornburg is a large multi-state law firm that does a lot of business litigation and no doubt wants to protect its reputation. Employing a crackpot who represents a crackpot is bad for business, so they 86'd that damn fool almost instantly.

(18,486 posts)That at least could arguably be seen as a reasonable risk. Saying you represent a president - even that one - could possibly bring some business and prestige in some circles.
But this lawyer lost his partnership over THE MYPILLOW GUY!

(3,063 posts)and they fired the lawyer that did it.
What happens now is the filling moot?
The law firm simply withdrew as counsel. The fired lawyer can continue in his individual capacity - although it might be hard for him to do that since he doesn't have a firm backing him up.

(115,831 posts)why a respectable law firm ever hired that lawyer in the first place, since there's nothing in that dog's breakfast that states a cognizable cause of action. But a google search of Mr. Beck also didn't turn up any history of Trumpish weirdness. He's been a lawyer for 30 years, specializing in employment law so this case is outside his field, but it's so fucked up that a first-year law student could shoot it full of holes. Did he draft the complaint or did the TX lawyers do it? But I couldn't find anything unusual about them, either. This is a big ol' WTF?
BobTheSubgenius
(11,564 posts)The back story here must be very peculiar. It doesn't sound like a good law firm would even hire him let alone make him a partner. Maybe he carried the financing to get them into the big time. Maybe some kompromat.
I don't imagine we'll ever know.
Ocelot II
(115,831 posts)What caused him to suddenly break bad and decide to represent a total crackpot, and, without notifying or seeking permission from his firm, file a completely meritless lawsuit in federal court (which has judges that tend not to take prisoners) might never be known. Maybe he thought it would be good publicity. It wasn't.
BobTheSubgenius
(11,564 posts)It's just perfect for Mike Lindell, though. I wouldn't have expected anything less, in terms of hilarity, eye-rolling and "you've GOT to be kidding." I do feel badly for the other partners and the rest of the firm, though. This is something they might take years to recover from, and all the lost income concomitant to this tsunami of awful lawyerin' is, of course, gone forever.
This guy will end up hanging a shingle outside his own house, fishing for clients that might pass by. If I was going to bet on it, I'd take 5 to 1 or better that it would be upside down.

(145,501 posts)Barnes & Thornburg is one of the top 100 law firms in the country which is why it was surprising to see this firm sign onto Mike Lindel's poorly drafted lawsuit. I know someone doing a deal with Barnes and they are a good firm. This firm fired the partner who signed the pleadings in the Lindel case

The Am Law 100 firm said the partner didnt receive firm authorization for the suit and the firm is immediately withdrawing as local counsel.
Alec Beck, who has been a labor and employment partner at the 100 firm since 2019, is working alongside a lead counsel from Houston trial law firm Daniels & Tredennick in the defamation and abuse of process suit filed Thursday in Minnesota federal court.
Late last night, firm management became aware of the filing of the complaint, which was done without receiving firm authorization pursuant to internal firm approval procedures, a Barnes & Thornburg spokesperson said Friday. While the firm cannot comment substantively on pending matters, the firm is immediately taking the requisite steps to withdraw as local counsel in this matter and end the client relationship. The attorney representing the client in this matter is no longer with the firm.
A number of top lawfirms have in effect fired trump as a client and now a top law firm is running away from My Pillow and Lindel

hmm.
Would think that would have been the test whether or not to proceed in this one.
Seems like i read and heard on many other unrelated occasions, the person bringing the bogus lawsuit has to pay the opposing atty's fees and court costs too when they lose or gets toss out? dismissed?

(9,670 posts)Here's a guy that's otherwise a pillar of society, working as a partner in a prestigious law firm. Surely his rational mind told him that Mike Lindell is a maniac. Surely his rational mind told him to obtain partner consent to this lunatic litigation.
The fact that this proficient, successful lawyer ran through so many stop signs makes me wonder if he could help himself. I think he has a mental disorder, and I think that it's a shared gene with a large percentage of our population.
