According to BuzzFeed News, the Department of Justice is continuing the efforts to take over the legal defense of former President Donald Trump in a defamation case from advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, who has alleged the former president raped her in a department store in the 1990s.
Last year, a federal judge ruled the DOJ could not take over Trump's defense; however, the litigation over the matter is ongoing.

(18,940 posts)Executive Branch above other considerations.
This is an example of defending A) the liberty of a POTUS to defame someone without personal consequence -- an immune to everything god-king executive, oh they like that -- and B) a prior DOJ action -- which a few of them were a part of, and many others anticipate being second-guessed at some point in the future and want the institution to back them to the hilt when it is their turn.
Self-interested bureaucrats FILL institutions like the DOJ. Imagine a building full of hundreds of Rod Rosensteins, all of whom self-righteously claim the mantle of decades-long non-partisan career civil servant when their judgement or priorities are questioned. That's the upper ranks of the DOJ beyond Biden's Senate-confirmed appointees.
