Mr. President, your grass is (almost) ready! (Pic Heavy)
I feel very special today. I was a very small part of the rebuilding project between the National Monument and the Capitol Building. My specific task was top dressing some of the new lawn area between these two landmarks in preparation for the next (Obamas) Inauguration.
So if youre lucky enough to stand on this grass during the re inauguration, or even if you just see it on TV, take heart in knowing a DUer was (a small) part of getting this project completed.
Here are some pics:

What we were doing, top dressing the grass

The area between us and the Capitol Building should be grass in just a couple of weeks. Well be back for the top dressing of that area shortly.

My best shot of the day, imo

Ill take many more and much better pics of the next round of work. Hope this was a fun distraction for you on the eve of a busy debate night. Well have this project completed for the hundreds of thousands that turn out to see Obama sworn into office for the second time!

I simply work for one of the private companies that got the contract to do the work.
It truly was a pleasure to get away from the golf course to be a part of this project. I plan on standing on that grass with thousands (millions?) cheering Obama's re inauguration Jan 20th.

That's okay if you didn't.
If (when) Obama is sworn in again we'll happily put up with whatever Nature - and DC police - throw at us!

(53,410 posts)We have an army of you guys working in UC Berkeley which is one of the most beautiful campuses around. You are rarely seen, but my goodness! Your work is beautiful indeed!

(8,434 posts)I work at a golf course and the motto (when we open) will be, let your work be seen, not you.
We are supposed to go out of our way to never be seen. Then we get to go to the clubhouse for lunch and listen to people whine about the minor problems we have yet to address.
We work HARD for nearly NOTHING. We also have great pride in our work.
It warms my heart to know even one person out there knows there is a PERSON behind that beautiful manicured view.

, so it's past time. Thanks for the hard work you all put in.

(8,434 posts)that went through the rural heart of VA7. I haven't driven that way in 6 months as I have no reason to go that direction.
I was AMAZED by the Powell, Kaine, and Obama signs. There are several properties that I know hosted large Cantor signs over the years and now they have LARGE Powell signs out front.
VA's 7th might just be the huge upset this election despite the debbie downers!

Oh, and what the heck is top dressing?

(8,434 posts)It's gonna be trampled and destroyed that day.
Seriously though, it can be brought back quickly. It will have to wait until spring to really look like it does now, but a majority of the work is happening under the grass. New irrigation, drainage, sand, soil, etc etc etc. It's being built in a way that it can be regrown and repaired quickly after heavy traffic.
Top dressing is the application of sand or soil (sand in this case) to the grown in turf. It aides in leveling the ground, drainage, absorption of fertilizers and nutrients, and compaction of the soil.
We literally threw sand at the grass, dragged a wire rug over the top of it, then had someone dump a ton of water on it tonight. It sounds crazy, but it really works.

(8,434 posts)Hopefully I'll be picked to do the final top dressing in the next few weeks. If so, I'll take many more pics and post.
I can't wait to stand on this lawn and cheer for Obama again!
