I stumbled across this info. some time back, but I can't remember where. I have always been interested in Cornwall, as one branch of my family emigrated from there in the 1600's.

"The southernmost point in England is more than 140 miles further north than the northernmost point in the state of Maine, USA.

"Lizard Point is the most southerly point on mainland Great Britain at 49° 57' 30" N. With the exception of parts of the Isles of Scilly, it is the southernmost part of England and the wider United Kingdom.

"Cornwall is the county that forms the tip of the southwestern peninsula of England; this area has a mild and warm climate regulated by the Gulf Stream. The mild climate allows rich plant cover, such as palm trees in the far south and west of the county and in the Isles of Scilly, due to sub-tropical conditions in the summer.

"Northernmost point in the state of Maine is West Quoddy Head, Maine (also the easternmost point in the 50 United States) 44°49′N 66°57′W"
