Do you still wear your mask?
It seems most people believe that it is over?
However, I read that the number of cases last week exceeded those of the week before?
There is a great desire in the country for things to return to normal.
The trauma of the last few years, not just the last year, has taken its toll on everybody.
Are all of the hopes premature?

(32,265 posts)The vaccination rate in the US is 43%, in Arkansas it's 32%, in Sebastian County (where I live), it's 23%. At that rate, we're going to be dealing with Covid for a long time.

(14,765 posts)The non-vaccinated risk acute covid-19 infections with this Delta variant on the move...and they will infect others...Even vaccinated people can catch covid-19....the vaccine is not a "shield"....it just will prompt the immune system to kick ass on covid-19 and diminish the effects of illness from covid-19...most will be asymptomatic so far...
Keep your covid-19 prevention protocols close if not in general practice...I still won't go to a restaurant for a meal....wear a mask at the grocery store...I have been vaccinated with Moderna since December 2020 as a first responder.

(33,348 posts)I will continue to wear my mask indoors and avoid staying inside spaces where people aren't masked until the vaccination rate for adults reaches 65-70%, which may be never in parts of the US.
I've been vaccinated since mid March. Just booked my first plane trip for mid January back to Bonaire, where I was in March 2019 and cut my trip short by a week because of Covid and fear the airport would close. Life is getting too short, for me. I have no other plans to fly anywhere, but damnit, I'm going back to Bonaire, unless the airport is closed again.

Also if you live in a region populated by not insane people, we are nearing herd immunity - so even those who are at risk are relatively safe.

(33,424 posts)I haven't worn a mask in months since I was vaccinated. The cases went up last week ---- a grand total of 0.7%. A statistical burp. And one reason was it was a week following a holiday week and it always happens like that.

(9,390 posts)Moving in the right direction. Does not mean you should not protect yourself, and it does not mean that others ( the unvaccinated) could do more, but the numbers dont lie. It is on the way down and hopefully out of our lives some time in the not too distant future

(12,286 posts)It is still ravaging the globe and the willfully unvaccinated.
But if you have been vaccinated the variants are no threat.
That may change.
But for now, yes. It is over for the vaccinated.
Go about your life and dont worry about it.
Really.
Follow the CDC guidance.

(7,400 posts)It isn't like the UK had a lot of cases, but 30% of the deaths are people fully vaccinated.
For someone like me, fully vaccinated but high risk, I plan to keep up with the mask and picking my situations carefully.

I see Daily Mail sighted quite a lot on DU so I assume reliable.... the raw numbers aren't huge but it seems to be worthy of concern for someone like me.

(23,631 posts)I see its based on 42 cases and, Those who died in the UK after being fully vaccinated were likely to have been elderly and have suffered complications. I believe this has been the case in the US too, regarding deaths among the fully vaccinated.
Clearly youre significantly better off if youve been fully vaccinated but if youre immunocompromised or otherwise vulnerable youd definitely be wise to continue to take additional precautions.

(47,423 posts)We have a lot of anti-vaxxers in this country. We have people who refuse to be vaccinated. Many countries don't have enough vaccine for people who want to get vaccinated. When virus infects people, it gets an opportunity to mutate.
So, it's not over.

(2,504 posts)It's not over but it may as well be. The city was packed this weekend. Every bar and restaurant had hour long lines to get in. The busses and L/subways were shoulder to shoulder. Mask usage was nonexistent. Even on the busses and in the subway and L trains, where masks are still technically required regardless of vaccination status, maybe 30-40% were actually wearing them. No enforcement at all anywhere. I went by Navy Pier last night and it was absolutely full of people. They had their first 100% capacity baseball game this weekend as well.

Right now, the paint appears to be drying in many areas of the country, but there are sudden jumps in some counties and I don't think it's all attributable to delayed case reporting.

(9,173 posts)Ate at a Cracker Barrel yesterday because our son was in town visiting us, and we initially wore masks inside (in the store part) and most employees there weren't even wearing them, so we took ours off before we even got a table.
Next door neighbor was fully vaccinated and contracted covid. Sick for two weeks but recovered.
I live in a building where fellow tenants and visitors do not mask in common areas.
Shoppers at store and outdoor farmer's markets do not distance even though masks are required.
Variants are scary and spreading.
So, fully vaccinated and mask wearing in public.

We have many more variants emerging, which alarms me.
I get my updates from the kids. They've been intubating healthy, fully vaxxed 25-35 year olds lately with quite a few dying. (They tell me they're seeing far too many breakthrough cases, which is of grave concern)

(1,495 posts)I still wear my mask. I am vaccinated, but since I am immune compromised, I don't feel real safe, especially with the new variants. In my county, 6 fully vaccinated people died of Covid last month. There are over 3000 counties in the United States. That's a lot of dead vaccinated people if every county has as many deaths as mine did. There are still 1000s of cases every day, with many states not reporting consistently anymore, so who knows what's actually going on. The CDC says they are no longer reporting breakthrough cases in vaccinated people. I really hope it's over, but it doesn't seem that way to me. My doctor told me last Tuesday to keep wearing my mask, social distance, and take precautions. He said he thinks the CDC was nuts to remove the indoor mask mandate.
