California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner lashed out at comedian Jimmy Kimmel, calling him transphobic for a joke about how her political style is similar to Donald Trump’s.

“Are you sure that isn’t Donald Trump in a Caitlyn Jenner wig?” Kimmel joked on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week before showing photos of the two side-by-side making the same faces.

“He obviously believes that trans women are simply men with wigs on,” Jenner said on Twitter. “Where is the outrage from the left or LGBT community? Being WOKE must be optional if you are a Democrat.”

Jenner went on a Twitter tirade against Kimmel, bringing up racist and sexist jokes he has made in the past, as well as a sketch where he used blackface. Kimmel apologized last year for the blackface sketch.

Kimmel's comment was not okay. Just because he's generally supportive of trans rights doesn't mean he can uses denigrating language.

"trump in a wig" plays off anti-trans imagery of trans women being men in wigs. Kimmel is usually a better comedian than that. He should have said something like "trump with a worse driving record" or "trump with an active twitter account" or even "trump with better hair"

Sometimes, something IS a dogwhistle in a way it wouldn't be if he said it about a cis woman. It's just true. And entirely possible it was unintentional or unconscious, but he should still apologize. This is harmful to trans women, who are already getting attacked on all sorts of fronts and the stereotype of predatory men in wigs and dresses is getting pushed hard. Not just right-wingers doing it either, the TERF brigade is probably even more dangerous because it's more insidious.

Jenner is terrible but mocking her for being a trans woman hurts ALL trans people. Mock her for the specific ways that she, individually, is terrible, there's no shortage of material there.
