Memphis' Katori Hall wins Pulitzer Prize (Drama)

"Memphis' Katori Hall on Friday was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for drama for "The Hot Wing King," a Memphis-set comic play that ran for only a few weeks in New York before the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shutdown of the city's theaters.
The Pulitzer board called Hall's play a funny, deeply felt consideration of Black masculinity and how it is perceived, filtered through the experiences of a loving gay couple and their extended family as they prepare for a culinary competition.
The prize represents a highlight of what has been an astonishing run of hard-earned success and recognition for the Memphis-born Hall, 40, a Craigmont High School graduate and former intern at The Commercial Appeal who currently finds herself a Tony Award nominee for co-writing "Tina: The Tina Turner Musical," the hit Broadway biographical musical about the rock-and-soul singer from Nutbush, Tennessee.
