Remember, Putin is "worried" about how the capitol rioters civil rights. He says that it is nothing but political persecution.

4. I'm not so sure of that

Certainly in the Cold War that might have been the case. But we have laws here they don’t. For example, domestic abuse is illegal here. Russia is also chock full of homophobes who might not like our social mores which are vastly more liberal than theirs.
Finally, the US is 30 percent+ POCs, while Russia has almost no black or brown people, particularly in the European power center.
