(9,390 posts)She was a rescue with a violent temper when we first got her. She was so bad I had to keep her in the basement away from my kids while fostering her but we realized she was going no where. She was with us for almost 10 years, became the nana dog to our children, the protector of my wife and my security system when I had to travel for work. She never heard the words attack or sic-em, but she instinctively knew her job was to protect. She never bit anyone after joining our family, although she tried a few times and she scared the hell out of a lot of people. She was our good dog.
I am sorry for the Bidens family loss. Having Major from a puppy must make the loss even worse.

(25,816 posts)In my time I have lost: Miles, Sheba, Neptune, Zen, Sammy, Buster and Steiner.
I miss having a dog, but as one with a fixed income, they are increasingly more expensive
to keep, especially the big dogs that I like--like Champ.

(3,477 posts)I still get misty-eyed when I think of Riley, my dog from when I was a kid, and he's been dead for over 20 years. Holding him while he died was one of the most difficult things I ever did... and dammit, now I'm crying.
These days we have our chocolate lab, Wicket, and he's enriched our lives in so many ways. The knowledge that someday I'll have to say goodbye is always lurking in the back of my mind, even though he's just over a year old now.
Yep, dogs really are the best people. All they know how to do is love their humans. We don't deserve them.
RIP Champ. Peace and comfort to the Bidens for their loss.
