A Black Super Duty Ford F150 hit multiple bicyclists near the westbound lanes of Highway 60 in front of Horne Auto Collision Center before driving away from the scene, authorities said. The incident happened during a "Bike the Bluff" event.
Officers pursued the driver to the area of South 3rd Drive and West Oliver, authorities said. An officer shot the suspect behind a nearby Ace Hardware store.
Six of the bicyclists were transported to a local hospital, four of which were in critical condition, authorities said. The other two were in critical condition but stable. The suspect, who has yet to be identified by police, is also in critical condition but stable, authorities said.
I would not be surprised to learn "done made me mad" will be the driver's "defense." Remember, Republicans in several states are fighting to make running people over with a massive insecurity-binky-on-wheels legal if there's a protest involved; how far of a stretch do you think it is from "protest" to "minor inconvenience"?

(57,073 posts)It's been a thing for morons with diesel pick ups to roll coal at cyclists for years in south.

(12,362 posts)Of course the reporting is trash... is it a F150 or a SD????

(57,073 posts)I was just making point about apparent resentment among some pick up drivers towards cyclists.
Happened a lot in Asheville when I lived there.

(13,408 posts)It's a minor detail whether it was a Super Duty or an F-150.

I know it's splitting hairs, and it may seem to be an irrelevant point, but it isn't a Super Duty Ford Truck. Super Duties are F-250s, F-350s, F-450s, and F-550s. F-150s are 1/2 ton trucks. The truck in the photo appears to be a F-150.
I spent 35 years in broadcast news, and I believe facts are important. If I was directing a live newscast I would have the anchor correct the information. The news professionals I worked with would expect nothing less. It may not seem important, but misinformation has a way of snowballing out of control. It's unfortunate that the mistake in reporting was made by a local T.V. station.
Full disclosure, I'm a 70 year old Jewish liberal, and I own an F-250 Super Duty. I use it to tow my 27 foot travel trailer around the country. I'm also a cyclist who once rode double centuries, and it sickens me that this happens. I hope the bastard rots in jail.

(50,529 posts)There are F-250 (3/4 ton), F-350 (1 ton) F-450 (1 ton commercial vehicle) and F-550 (1 ton chassis cab for attaching custom beds like utility booms and ambulance bodies).

(3,155 posts)Thank you. It seems I got the facts wrong as well. I'll correct my post.

(83,654 posts)One of the pictures in post 17 shows debris on the side walk. There are shoes, hats and helmets worn by the bikers strewn all over the place. A violent hit that dislodged their clothing. I pray no one dies from this senseless violence.

(67,088 posts)dealt with a lot of motorcyclists said many of the accidents were sometimes intentional by trucks/drivers running motorcycles off the road. What a fucken sport!

(10,823 posts)My oldest son is a member of a bicycling club in Philly. They ride in large, tight groups and my son has said they've had encounters (middle finger salutes, lots of cursing) from cranky drivers.
But this is beyond the pale when a driver deliberately runs a group down. For what reason? He/she is annoyed? Uncontrolled rage at anything, everything.
People have lost their bloody minds!

A few hundred pounds hitting the top of the window frame at once could buckle the roof.
As part of energy absorption, roofs will crumple, too.
Just a guess.

(32,075 posts)It's literally rotting away, the non-metal parts, anyway. Had one close call too many, and had too many things thrown at me. The roads around here are unsafe for cyclists. No shoulder, no bike lanes, lots of idiots on the roads who have no business behind the wheel of anything, even a golf cart.
