Airlines Seeking Criminal Charges Against Unruly Passengers

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. airlines and their unions want the Justice Department to send a strong message against the rise in unruly passengers with additional federal criminal charges.

Several airline trade groups and unions sent a letter Monday to Attorney General Merrick Garland calling for criminal enforcement that goes beyond the increase in civil charges filed so far this year by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

“The federal government should send a strong and consistent message through criminal enforcement that compliance with federal law and upholding aviation safety are of paramount importance,” the groups said in the letter.

The Justice Department didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on the letters.

The FAA says it has been aggressively acting against people who violate federal regulations. It has sought more than $300,000 in fines in more than 20 cases. ...........(more)

There are countries in Europe that have strict laws against hostile, even verbal, actions against public officials. I'm coming around to appreciate those laws. You don't like laws/rules, vote. Harassing those charged with enforcing them is really counter productive. For one thing, they may be your best allies in getting them changed, because they don't like enforcing them. I am thinking of all the times I've been to the DMV and listened to pissed off people yelling at clerks. The clerks don't make the rules, and they have little to no authority to modify/ameliorate them.

Ya don't like mask laws, address it BEFORE you get on the plane.

these altercations take place around people who are not at liberty to get away from them, they cause disruptions in the lives of many people, detract airline employees from their actual duties, etc. THROW THE BOOK AT THESE FOLK.

back in the 70's with all the hi-jacking's , U.S. MARSHALL'S where on flight's & that kind'a sort'a slowed it down . heading for the cock-pit is not a public dispute . It is a threat to passenger safety & crew !! no excuses period ! it was a federal crime back then & what the hell changed now is beyond me !! didn't people learn anything from 9/11 ???

for lost operating costs and passenger delays, plus fines.

No fly list forever. Make the criminal charges felonies so these butt licks don’t get to carry weapons legally either.
