If they feel the other is too 'different' from them then it shorts out the empathy circuit in their brain. They have to be able to almost literally put themselves in the other's place.

It's not about the racism or racist behavior of individuals. The GOPers say that as long as you aren't doing things like burning crosses or wearing white pointy hoods or using the "n" word in public you can't be a racist, and it's mean and unfair (and also racist) to suggest otherwise. But what CRT is about is the idea that many laws and policies that are superficially neutral actually operate to perpetuate a social system that disadvantages minorities. The GOPers don't want to dig that deep, though, because it would upset too many apple carts, so they'll just whine about how CRT is just a way of saying white people are bad.
