Not hyperbole.
American democracy is now in its death throes.

I'm not sure some realize the gravity of the situation right NOW!

(6,252 posts)There will be other elections, but when your vote doesnt count, or when it can be tossed out by a faceless repuke legislator at state level who feels that there may have been issues with it, why bother to ever vote again?
The Constitution is broken. It needs an update. Full stop.

There was an election today in the US. There will be elections in the near future(next couple of years, at last).
Keep fighting. Weve lost nothing.

(2,971 posts)rather taking steps to prevent it, or at least make it less likely? If I thought such a thing were in my future, rest assured that the last thing I'd be doing would arguing about it on DU!
As for the nukes, if you want to DISABLE THEM (your caps, not mine), that does rather presuppose that you'll need to get control of them in the first place, yes? That will of necessity require you to take them over, at least long enough to put them out of commission.
I would also point out that in addition to all of the nukes in the missile silos, you'll need to get control of the ones which are launched from fighters and bombers. Then there's the small matter of our boomers (nuclear missile submarines), a number of which are at sea at any given time.
This sounds like quite the undertaking! But please do elaborate on your plans.

(3,254 posts)A scrappy band of dedicated progressives infiltrating the nuclear silos to take control of and then dismantle the nukes! Sneaking onto airbases to disable the bombers! Scuba-diving to slip into the launch tubes on the boomers so they can be taken out! Chris Pratt and Lin-Manuel Miranda as the leading men, Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong'o as the leading ladies! In summer 2023, the hottest movie will be... Blue Storm Rising.
Might have to work on that title, but still, I smell Oscar bait!

(2,971 posts)If we get writer's block, we can always just find some old movie with a similar plot and file off the serial numbers.
Let's see....a well intentioned activist who's known for advocating for justice and truth rids the world of nuclear weapons, despite the villainous machinations of an evil capitalist.
Got it! Granted, compared to our film it's a bit too gritty and realistic, but it should serve as a basic template.

be the last fair election for some time. Its going to take a long time to undo this shit, and the question is whether democracy - as we conceive of it - can survive long enough to come out on the other side.
As for a shooting war - nah. Not going to happen. But the effective and practical suspension of free and fair elections is a legit concern right now.

And we will NOT ACCEPT our votes not being counted or VOTER SUPPRESSION any longer.
It will make the summer of 2020 U.S. protests look like child's play by comparison.
Over 80M Americans with the force of the 2020 U.S. BLM protests, 2020 Belarus protests, and 2021 Myanmar protests COMBINED AND EXPANDED!
We are the LOUD MAJORITY.

(25,898 posts)at least since FDR. There was a widely held belief before the 2004 election that Bush would somehow simply cancel that election. Didn't happen. And despite how hard Trump tried, he was not able to overturn last year's election.
So I feel confident that we'll go on having elections for a long time.
