Cows Escaped from a Meatpacking Plant in California

This is happening right now .

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the cows were running around surface streets in the area of Beverly Road and Durfee Avenue before running from the intersection and settling in a cul-de-sac surrounded by deputies.

LASD attempted to round up the cows, but was unsuccessful in the attempt as the cattle scattered through the neighborhood. One of the cows was reportedly injured while trying to run away.

Authorities said one person was taken to an area hospital in unknown condition after being run over by at least one cow, and one of the cows was shot and killed by a deputy. It was not immediately known what led up to the shooting.

I see so many videos of border collies -- fearless -- getting the job done with hoofers.

Make me wish I were a vegetarian. I’ve read more than one story of cows escaping certain death and I feel guilty. They are cognizant of their fate.

We pulled that plug a long time ago. It's easier than you think- and let me tell you, I can make "sausage" gravy and biscuits that will both make you happy, and clog your arteries- you would swear you were eating the real thing.

I've veered into more meatless, but still get some ground meat to make and mix in with girl dog's food. Then I have a small burger. When you get older your intake usually goes down so there's that also.

are NOT on a vegetarian diet

I know some people swear their pets are fine on a vegetarian diet- but I can't do that yet. Buddy and Maude are both rescues--- they are just expected to nap in the AC right now. (Buddy Threadgoode, Jr. is a mixed Golden and Maude is a barn tabby- we got them both as adults)

the cows not wanting to hurt anyone, just gather together, and be safe

the guy behind the desk said they were young--a year to 18 months--and spooked, and getting ready to go to the processing plant

(something to that effect)

i'm with you on your comments. i was a vegetarian for a few years and only this past year picked up the habit of eating beef & chicken again. i stopped eating pork five or six yrs ago after watching a video of pigs going up a ramp to their death, fully aware of what was waiting for them--it was fucking horrible.

it was at night but I could see the cows faces through the grill work on the trucks. They had their faces up sniffing the air, the looks on their faces haunts me to this day. Even now just thinking of it brings me to tears. I was a vegetarian then but since have become vegan.

Feeling terrible watching them trying to get some place safe. I know people think cows are dumb and mindless, but I can't be persuaded that they don't sense the terror and smell the death of the other cattle, and sense that they are next. Seen too many videos of how they react to love, gentleness and kindness. They love it and show affection. Knowing that makes the guilt worse.

And I f'ing love cheeseburgers. I hate that. To think of the misery and the horror they go through...

20 years.

It's not that hard. I think many folks think "salads" when they see "vegetarian." That's not true. We hang out in the same restaurants, and now, with the Impossible Burger- eat almost the same things you do.

That was a single cow. It happens now and then at meat packing plants. During the escape things can get pretty crazy. I see there was one injured person though it didn’t describe the circumstances.
