(Bloomberg) -- Nine months after the declaration of a national emergency due to the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. births fell by 8% in a month.
The December drop marked an acceleration in declines in the second part of the year. For the full year, the number of babies born in the country fell 4% to about 3.6 million, the largest decline since 1973, according to a Wednesday report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The latest data are early evidence of the drastic impact from the health crisis on birth rates, with the full effect expected to show in 2021 data.
Births have generally been on the decline in the years since the Great Depression, as Americans have been getting married later and putting off having kids. (31,307 posts)not so much. I think my great niece is the only family member i'm aware of who got pregnant during lockdown, and that was in AR so it probably doesn't count anyway.

I know the only member of my extended family in the baby zone was being extremely fastidious. All of that energy was being redirected toward self improvement to great effect I might add. Now, however, the mating dance is back in full swing and is going better than ever. So, maybe a break was a good thing in this instance.

I bet the marriage rates dropped too because so many people had to cancel their weddings.
In any case, my daughter had our first grandchild in May - she was at a birthday party two weeks ago with a friend who had a 1 week old and another a 2 month old. Our close friends also had their first grandchild in May. Maybe there will be a boom in 2022 to make up for the deficit.
So, I'll wait until the data comes for birth rates through the end of this September and maybe through 2022 to conclude anything.
