Yikes!!!
It's not just the Western region of the US that's sweltering right now. Siberia in Russia is baking, and satellites are bearing witness to a brutal heat wave above the Arctic Circle. Copernicus Sentinel-3A and Sentinel-3B satellites captured a snapshot of land surface temperatures on June 20, and it was hot.
According to NASA, "Land surface temperature is how hot the 'surface' of the Earth would feel to the touch in a particular location." The Sentinel image shows a peak ground temperature of 118 degrees Fahrenheit (48 degrees Celsius) near Verkhojansk, a small town usually known for its extreme cold temperatures.
The World Meteorological Organization has been tracking the rise in temperatures around the world. "The most dramatic change is in the Arctic, which is warming more than twice as fast as the global average," the agency said Monday in a statement aimed at raising awareness of the urgency to act on the climate crisis.

(14,075 posts)It's definitely hot, but we should be aware that 118 degrees is not the air temperature which is what usually gets reported.

More melt water isnt helpful even if we find a few Ice Age mammals.

An excessive heat watch starts either Friday or Saturday depending on which part of the Pacific Northwest you live in and continues through Monday. The region will see high temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal at many locations, putting numerous daily, monthly and possible all-time high-temperature records in jeopardy.
In the Portland-Vancouver metro area and the Columbia River Gorge, high temperatures up to 108 degrees are possible, according to the National Weather Service.
Today was our last nice day.
We have 104 for 2 days
Possibly.

In essence, what we continue to say by our collective inaction on Climate Emergency is, you all need to adapt. We love our status quo more than you. You are correct, malaise, the West is cooking.

(9,287 posts)We have demonstrated the role of anthropogenically driven temperature changes in the recent period of prolonged Siberian heat that was exceptional at both the local and wider regional scales, bringing record-breaking 6-month and daily maximum temperatures that were virtually impossible in the pre-industrial climate. Furthermore, the natural environment and human infrastructure of the region is almost uniquely vulnerable to warming and is the source of hazards to local populations as well as to the global environment. The demonstrable anthropogenic role in these events presents us with a stark warning of the impacts of human influence on climate that are hard to ignore.
