All of our food has melted, due to the fact that our current fridge won't get cold enough to do what it's supposed to do. It's still running, it just doesn't get cold.
So last Monday, we went to a few stores, like Best Buy, Lowes and Home Depot, but they had nothing in stock at our budget of $500-600, which is basically rock bottom for a decent sized unit.
So we went to the Sears store in Pasadena, parked behind the store where the Sears auto service bays are, and went to the back entrance - which was locked and gated.
One of the auto service guys showed us how to get in the store from inside the service bay, and when we entered the store, it was like...a Ghost Store. I saw one other customer, and very few employees/floorwalkers* anywhere.
We went to the appliance section, found a fridge that we were interested in, just as a floorwalker approached. We showed him the fridge, he said that he didn't know if they had it in stock, and that he couldn't check, because their nationwide computer system had been down for a week. So they couldn't check inventory, and they could not even take credit or debit card payments, it was cash only.
The floorwalker said that the rumor was that Corporate HQ was trying to create conditions so bad that they would be "forced" to close more stores and let many people go.
We still don't have a refrigerator, and all of our food is now bad or almost there.
*I come from a family in Chicago that, that, back in the late 50s to late 70s, included relatives who worked for Sears, including an aunt who was the personal secretary to the VP of Sears Roebuck, and a couple of my uncles were floorwalkers - that was their job title.

I'll try to find out, I'd like to know.
TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)He managed to sell off most of the profitable parts of the business, like Craftsman tools, and let the rest of it linger. The local KMart went to hell, with limited inventory and badly in need of a new coat of paint. The Sears Tool & Appliance store seemed to be doing well, but not after it was left unstocked and ultimately closed.
(Curiously, the Targets and the Walmarts around here are doing pretty well. But, Target spent a lot of money fixing up its stores.)
A lot of what he sold was to himself or close friends. Those, of course, were those potentially profitable parts. I think Craftsman went to someone else because he didn't want to bother to maintain its reputation.
Last I heard, he claims to have done a great job.

(5,722 posts)the Spring last year I was desperate for a chest freezer as mine died. They were not to be had anywhere except ... Sears. Supposedly. Online.
The saga of my trying to get the freezer they billed me for when ordering is long, but it involved 3 changed delivery dates over a 5 month period until finally I was able to get one from Lowes, which charged when they shipped which is of course what ethical companies do. At one point Sears customer service suggested ordering a 2nd one and keeping both delivery dates then cancelling the one that wasnt delivered.
HAHAHA ... what sort of idiot did they think I was? Did what they said. Paid for another freezer. The reviews online for freezers were all one star, folks being charged and getting nothing just like me. In the end I did get refunded for the 2 freezers but it wasnt simple.
In fairness, they were sketchy and suspicious from the start, having all those freezers when nobody else had any. I knew that but was desperate and so waded through it with eyes (mostly) wide open.

(5,722 posts)customers to even think of us. Sears Holding seemed to be as desperate for $$ as I was for a freezer so we made quite a pair.
I ordered in April I think, and cancelled them both in late October when I got the Lowes one. The first Sears delivery promise was mid-June, and theyd call a couple of days before to say it was delayed 2 months.
Crazy freezer times.

I'm so old, I remember a fridge my grandmother had in her basement - originally purchased in the 1920s - from my earliest memories until the late 1970s, when I left the area for L.A.
It looked kinda like this:

That f*cker ran for over 50 years.
For all I know, it may still be running, because grandma's long gone, but the house is still there, and owned by a direct family member.

(1,594 posts)How old was your LG when you replaced it? How many problems did you have with it? I had no idea service plans/ext warranties were refundable if they went unused. Thats pretty cool.
We bought a 27-28 GE French Door fridge in May of 2014. We went through HD b/c they deliver for free to our small town while Lowes doesnt. Bought the 5-year extended warranty. Of course it wasnt until year 6 that we started having problems with it. We filled it with groceries one day last summer. The next morning I could tell something was wrong with it b/c it felt tepid when I opened the doors. Instead of being 38 degrees, it was 50-52 degrees. Weve been dealing with it since then (using our other fridges in the basement and such). It started cooling well randomly for a while, but went back to not cooling right.
There are those in our house who believe if we pull it out and clean the back itll work again. We have pets, so hair can accumulate in places like that. I believe its more serious than that and probably needs a defrost control panel or something. There are DIY videos of it on YouTube, but cant see myself ordering the part and installing it. Given that we live in a dinky town with no repairs people, you have to pay a lot just to get someone to look at it. If parts and labor were to run $400 or something, Im more inclined to use that $$ on a new one. But I think having to replace a now 7-year old $1800 fridge is insane.

(80,454 posts)Samsung has started having lower end units mfd in China & they are junk.
So I've been told by HVAC-R pros.
That said, good luck finding a salesperson who knows which compressor is in a given model, let alone where it's made.
I thought I was going to have to replace mine but, thankfully, it was a false alarm.
Try cleaning the back. It only takes a couple of minutes. Do the same with your outdoor AC condenser (radiator) because dirt on it will raise pressure in system & cause stress on compressor. It's well worth the effort.
Good luck!

(31,308 posts)I've had good luck with Craigslist. I was ripped off once for a television, but otherwise all good. I even got 4 jobs through Craigslist though I don't know if it's that good of a resource for jobs anymore.
good luck with the fridge. I had a used Kenmore with a bottom freezer (which I love, and haven't had since) that I bought for $250 and it lasted several years before dying off. With your budget and the current shortages, it might be the best route.
Also in the meantime, get an ice chest and preserve your food. I once lived for over a year without a refrigerator (was poor then but with young children). Looking back not sure how I managed that but I know it involved daily runs to the store for ice and milk at the very least.

If one can get someone to remove, deliver and install, a used refrigerator can be a good deal at times.

(31,261 posts)Then in the 80s the stores became packed with low quality products that were hap-hazardly placed on shelves. Executives paid themselves big salaries while they scrimped on product quality and worker salaries, and as a result, they destroyed the brand.

They also ruined their stores by refusing to keep up with modern needs, clothes, etc. I quit shopping there years ago and started going to Kohl's and Belk (during sales).
Like Borders, they only have themselves to blame.

(1,617 posts)Whenever a big corporation does things that don't make economic sense, it usually makes perfect economic sense once you're aware of the tax loophole being exploited.
Probably something to the effect of making the work environment toxic enough to make the employees quit, creating an un-fillable job posting, shutting down the location due to "economic crisis" or "insufficient labor force", and finally, claiming some sort of tax credit or stimulus or writeoff from a COVID bill as a result.

My brother's experience at this state run site was a lot more complicated than mine, I got my vaccination at CVS in March and was in and out in a little over 20 minutes.

(16,971 posts)After getting married and buying a house the washing machine came along. Eventually we had 3 daughter that ended playing multiple sports + dance classes etc. So the washing machine saw heavy use. We sold the house in 2015 and the washing machine stayed with the house. In those 28 years I dont recall that it ever broke down. I always repaired the appliances myself so it possible I may have forgotten about replacing a belt but I doubt it. The one part that I had to replace was the selector knob on the front panel. I was working above the washer on a step ladder and dropped a tool and it landed on the knob and broke it. It was a chromed plastic part. I picked up a replacement at the Sears parts store and it was cast metal. They actually improved the part.

(10,943 posts)... in Pasadena? I go to the Target on Colorado, but don't know where Sears is, there... I went to the Sears in Glendale, on Central, but I think it closed. It really went downhill... the Sears brand went kaput. I moved recently and was going to buy a new fridge, but decided to take the old one. The movers scuffed the walls getting it in... chipped off paint and left dents. My brother said he got a new refrigerator and the delivery men did the same thing. Nothing you can do... if you cant move it yourself... Tell them to be careful!

(3,603 posts)Pulled it out from the wall and there was so much dust accumulated at the air intake that the fan stopped turning. I removed the intake cover, a very simple thing to do, and started pulling out wads of accumulated dust. Got a brush to get out as much as I could and the fan began turning and within minutes it was cooling.
Funny you mention Sears. We decided to get a new frig anyway as wed been talking about it for some time. Went to Sears and Lowes and with a Memorial Day sale, Sears had the same model we liked for $60 less. Delivery was originally scheduled for 6-16, but its been rescheduled 4 different times. (38,054 posts)Is our *Sears*. Sears was the go to for my parents, and my husband's when they live in America for 8 years - for appliances, tools, etc etc.
We went to one in Clark NJ when we closed on our home in 2013 - and they didn't have the "value" we expected.

(53,994 posts)When we bought our first house in the mid-1970's, the first thing we did was get a Sears charge card. We bought all our appliances and many other things for that crummy house on the card. I have no idea what the interest rate was, but we'd send the little payments we could afford for years on end until it was paid off. The appliances were excellent quality and seemed to last forever. Whenever we needed anything for that house or the next house (which also had an apartment over the garage), we'd drag out the Sears card and head for the local Sears store. We shopped there for decades. Then, one time, we went in and they told us they were discontinuing Sears cards. Since we had other credit cards available, we decided we might as well shop around. And that was the end of shopping for everything at Sears for us. Since then, we've still gone back - if you can locate an appliance outlet - and purchased a few things, but it's a far cry from the business they used to get from us. Too bad really. Sears was an institution. I remember the Sears Christmas catalog when I was a little girl and pouring over the toys for hours on end, making sure everyone knew which ones I hoped Santa would bring. Now there are no stores, let alone catalogs.

(40,690 posts)... one of the smaller sorts you see in motel rooms or college dorm rooms. These cost about $150 new.
I was rather fond of the mini fridge since it was whisper quiet and made our kitchen look much larger, but my wife insisted we have a full sized refrigerator.
When she found one she liked it took forever to have it delivered. It was probably on a container ship leaving Korea when she purchased it.
I'm not going to recommend a brand because there's no refrigerator I like.
When I was a kid our family lived an entire year without a refrigerator. This requires a slightly different approach to food and cooking but isn't difficult, especially if you have dogs, chickens, and a compost pile.
If you have chickens you can turn leftovers into eggs. We never ate our chickens but our great grandparents ate theirs.
The biggest advantage of new refrigerators over used is that most of them are more energy efficient and will save money in the long run.

If it is in a cubby-hole, pull it out until you can see space between the back top and the cubby-hole ceiling. If the refrigerator gets quieter after an hour with more air, it should start cooling and freezing again in a couple hours or so after you gave the back more air.

(5,549 posts)...I had the one that broke repaired.
Cost too much, IMO, but it was cheaper than buying a new one, or even a used one.
The main point of my OP was not so much about the fridge sitch, it was more to do with how Sears appears to be barely on life-support, with the Corporate HQ ready to pull the plug.
Which I thought was kinda sad, especially since I come from a "Sears family."
Plus, there's the story of how, in 1973, when I was assaulted by a cop for possessing cannabis, and charged with 6 felonies, it was a corporate lawyer from Sears, who was referred to me by the Sears VP that my aunt worked for, who got the judge to drop all but one minor weed possession charge at my preliminary hearing. Paid a $500 fine and walked away, totally free. The cop who violently assaulted me was not too happy when all of his bogus charges against me were dropped.
So I have fond memories of Sears, I guess you could say.
PS: I thought this thread had died out...
