Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIn your area, how many people still wear masks in stores and other indoor group environments?
Id say it is a little less than 50%. Not too bad a showing considering. I am in west-central Montgomery County, PA.

(5,835 posts)except the tourists, of course. in the suburban parishes it is rare to see a mask except the employees.

(34,909 posts)Even lower in places like home improvement stores and gyms. I'm in SC. We have a 37% vaccination rate. I'm still double-masking. Was contemplating going back to Zumba class on Fridays, since the instructor said there are only 7 or 8 in the class, but all this discussion about the Delta variant has changed my mind.

(2,234 posts)On my weekly grocery run in Columbus, I think a little less then half of customers were masked and only one or two employees. It has been slowly getting more maskless. Im still masking.
The Delta variant has me concerned even if vaccinated. I wear a mask in every store.

(10,104 posts)50% or less. I still wear mine to the grocery store and Walmart. My church just went to an honor system (dont have to mask if vaccinated), and Im happy to see children still masked. ELCA church so were basically all rational thinkers.

(255,501 posts)Grocery, pharmacy, gas station, convenience store, bank or auto dealership. But now the signs have changed to say that those who are vaccinated are welcome without masks and I see very few masks, more employees than patrons. And I wonder how many are really vaccinated since my county is currently only at 62% and there were 5 new cases reported this week, one of them is critical. So I'm not ready to give up my mask yet, despite being vaccinated since March.

(14,443 posts)People seem a little confused in restaurants. Some wear them coming in and going out, others dont because the moment they sit they can remove to eat. But most do in grocery and other stores.

(6,501 posts)I grew up a few miles away on the Onslow side of the river. Not surprised by Jacksonville. The vaccination rate is very low there, too.

(102,778 posts)Which is scary. I still wear mine most of the time but I have been forgetting to bring one sometimes. I live in a heavily traveled tourist pass through and I'm worried about the new variants and all those people coming from everywhere as well as the insurrectionists who never wore a mask in the first place.

(12,075 posts)customers trend older - no more than 20% of customers masked. Some really old geezers among them. Found out this week my a/c guy and palm trimming guy in there 50s both dead from Covid and my lawn guy, same age group in the hospital on a ventilator. All strong trumpers.

(2,769 posts)Some stores require masks. Some "suggest" wearing masks. Some don't require masks if you are fully vaccinated.
People generally follow the store's guidelines. Others wear masks all the time anyway.
MA has 70% vaccinated and is trying to convince the last holdouts.

(12,328 posts)It depends on the type of customer.
I live in an urban area, so people have been pretty great with masking. Otoh, my folks live in a rural area, and the vast majority of people everywhere do not mask, both pre- and post-vaccine availability.

Very few people go into stores or restaurants without masks. I flew down to Zürich yesterday, and while
people all had their masks on in the airports and the plane, the absurdity of some safety measures became
abundantly clear. We were asked to maintain one and a half meters distance from others in the gate area
while waiting to board. Then they packed us into a completely full plane like sardines.

(39,895 posts)Early on, when we had that partial reopening, the Catholic church reopened with a flourish, and the Catholic priest immediately came down with Covid, and was hospitalized. The senior women in town put down the word, and mask compliance shot up, and until the women stop wearing masks, everyone wears a mask.
The bar scene is another matter, and I'm not plugged into it, but when this "Delta virus" reaches town, you can bet the farm it will trace back to it, "Ground Zero, Baby!".
Eastern Iowa here.
Dubuque, IA (mostly visit here - 80% of our outings)
Davenport, IA/Quad Cities (visit sometimes here - 15% of our outings)
Iowa City, IA (rarely visit here)
Madison, WI (very rarely visit here)
It's over. Very few people are wearing masks. The economy looks like it's booming b/c stores (and parking lots and gas stations and...) are busy as hell. But almost nobody is wearing masks anymore. Just within the last week:
-Target in Dubuque, IA (almost nobody wearing masks -- a few older women were)
-Supercuts in Dubuque, IA (nobody wearing masks, including staff)
-Sam's Club in Davenport, IA (almost nobody wearing masks)
-Target in Davenport, IA (almost nobody wearing masks)
-Orthopedic Specialists in Davenport, IA (ortho clinic) (only nurses and dr's wearing masks...no patients wearing them...no receptionists wearing them...saw one patient with a mask in his shirt pocket, have no idea why he wasn't wearing it.
It's just as I suspected. When the CDC and stores switched to the "only wear masks if unvaccinated honor system" it was met (even here on DU) with excitement. Many were saying the day after or the week after it went into affect that most people they saw were still wearing them. I was like, "Give it a month or whatever, nobody will be wearing them." One of the few times I was right about something. At least in this part of the country.
I just know there going to be confrontations, fights, shootings in months to come. A**hole people who are bothered by mask wearers are going to get even more emboldened than they are now b/c they have the numbers. I'm nervously awaiting my first confrontation. I'm a big guy (tall, heavy). I look like an out of shape offensive lineman. Won't matter. I guarantee jerkoffs are going to get in my face about it.
Thankfully I do most of my shopping via store pickup (brought to the car) and drive through food. I hate fighting with people, esp over stupid stuff.

Predict that mask wearing will come back voluntarily once Delta variant numbers shoot up within next few weeks. I will be more careful soon since numbers lag by at least a couple of weeks. Delta spreads with fleeting contact, even outdoors...mostly among unvaccinated but there are more than a few reports of significant breakthroughs among the vaccinated. Too soon to know about Delta short/long term effects on vaccinated elderly or vaccinated with underlying conditions...
mRNA vaccines are amazing and miraculous...but not perfect for everyone and so much is still unknown.
