The Justice Department announced Thursday that it has charged a US Capitol riot suspect with assaulting a cameraman during the January 6 attack, saying the Illinois man is the first insurrection defendant to be arrested for allegedly harming a member of the media.
Shane Jason Woods, 43, has been charged with a number of federal offenses, including assault on a law enforcement officer, assault in special maritime and territorial jurisdiction, and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, according to a statement from the department.
Woods allegedly tripped and pushed to the ground a US Capitol Police officer who had been sprayed with bear mace by a rioter moments earlier, the statement said.
He also allegedly "ran into and tackled" a cameraman outside the Capitol, according to court filings. Officials said publicly available video capturing scenes from the riot showed Woods "walking closely around a cameraman" and that soon after he is "observed running into and tackling this same cameraman as the cameraman is facing away from Woods."

(1,654 posts)These kind of people will do things in a mob they might never ever think of doing by themselves or a small group. Not only do they do things like beat and terrorize people and smash property, they are fairly sure of never having to pay any price because everyone else is doing it and they might never have to be held accountable. In this case they didn't count on the sheer number of cameras present, not to mention those able to sift through all this data, visual and social media. In the old times KKK hid behind their white sheets. These people filmed themselves so they would have proof for their bragging rights.

(61,690 posts)was one of the first to make a deal. I think signalling for cooperation from others is why it was only probation, but I think the fine was about ten times too low.

They must have destroyed tens of thousands of dollars of property, in addition to assaulting and terrorizing the camera crew and reporter.
All of it was recorded, and at the time (I think I saw it the day of the insurrection) I thought: someone is going to pay for all this.

(43,027 posts)They must have little conscience, awareness, self-restraint (obviously), moral radar. How could they possibly believe they had the right to do this and that it was a good thing to do? And that they'd get away with it?
I know, I know, it's been explained to me before. Orange Polyp would have their back. But still ... lack of self-control. Violence. No respect for authority. Trashing treasures of our democracy. SMH

Or the cameras that were destroyed and the journalists that were harassed. They were just tourists doing tourist things! Move along, nothing to see here!
