(Detroit Free Press) Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr looked into and concluded that President Donald Trump's claims of voter fraud at the TCF Center in Detroit in last year's election were baseless and told him so, according to an interview published in the Atlantic.
In an explosive meeting between the men, held at the White House as Trump watched a Michigan legislative hearing on the election, Barr told the president that the legal team pressing the claims was a "clown show" and that Trump had actually done better in Detroit than he did in 2016, which helped disprove the claims.
"You actually did better there this time around than you did last time," Barr told the president, according to the article by ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl. "You keep on saying that the Department of Justice is not looking at this stuff, and we are looking at it in a responsible way. But your people keep on shoveling this s--- out.
Trump, who had cursed at Barr after hearing he had knocked down his claims of fraud publicly, apparently continued to rant about what he viewed as his Justice Department letting him down and called the attorney general worthless. ...........(more)

(115,608 posts)Don't feel too bad for Barr; he should have known he'd wind up under the bus with the rest of TFG's former staff the minute a hint of disagreement with The Great Orange God became public. Evidently there were lines even Barr wouldn't cross, but he'd already crossed a lot of other lines before he got to that one. If he's trying to salvage his reputation now, that ship has sailed and is far beyond the horizon.

(28,243 posts)I really hate to see Barr starting to look like a principled human being. After the innumerable ways he turned the Justice Department into trump's personal whorehouse...

(115,608 posts)He's already demonstrated his lack of principles, which apparently doesn't bother him, but I think he drew the line at being dragged into something that was actually nuts. He's ok with being sleazy but he doesn't want to seem crazy.

(115,608 posts)And it will be full of bloviating justifications for all his corrupt, authoritarian actions on behalf of TFG, how he was upholding the Constitution, blah, blah, blah. And how he tried to save America at the very end.

(115,608 posts)His version of treason would consist in elevating the presidency to be effectively a monarchy according to his crackpot unitary executive theory. He just saw that it wouldn't work with TFG; he's probably just waiting for a cleverer wannabe-dictator.
