4.2 with epicenter near Castro Valley, CA. Sounds like the Hayward Fault rolled over in its sleep.

(13,360 posts)let's hope it's not coming back to life :/
I remember looking it up after the Loma Prieta in '89...the san andreas and hayward faults seem to trip within a decade of eachother...
By that calculation, I think Hayward is long overdue. Ironically, hwy 13 that splits off 580 towards Berkeley seems to be right on the fault....
The house I grew up in was on the hills overlooking that very split....
good on my dad for constructing our house so well, only some hairline cracks in the 10 foot retaining wall that the house was layerd off of. He put 12' of rebar drilled back into the rock.
but I still wouldnt be living there for love nor money when the big one hits
:/ stay safe! keep us posted if you feel anything!

(9,072 posts)Relieve some of the stress on the fault. It's way overdue. Not too, too long ago, there was a 4.0 about a half mile from my old place along the Hayward. Felt that one in the night. Thought a car hit the apartment.
I thought, moving into North Bay, I was happy to be away from it.
Nope! I literally live above a fault that is overdue for a 6.8+. Literally. Above.
Because I am clearly an idiot who does not research these things.

(36,416 posts)San Andreas Fault fault, but when it lets loose in the East Bay, the economical damage will be off the charts.
Have you read Marc Reisner's posthumously published book, A Dangerous Place: California's Unsettling Fate? A dark, dark sobering read.
