Another city in Australia enters a lockdown as the Delta variant spreads. Mixing vaccines from Pfizer and AstraZeneca provides strong immunity, researchers find.
World Health Organization officials, concerned about the easing of precautions meant to stop the spread of the coronavirus even as the most contagious variant to date has emerged, have urged even fully vaccinated people to continue wearing masks and to keep taking other measures to prevent infection.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on the other hand, told fully vaccinated Americans in May that they no longer needed to wear masks indoors or to maintain a distance of six feet from other people. The agency also eased advice about testing and quarantine after suspected exposure to the virus.
Asked on Monday about the new cautions expressed by the W.H.O. the worlds largest public health organization a C.D.C. spokesman pointed to the existing guidance and gave no indication it would change.

Bad move on the US CDC.

(47,423 posts)So not sure what CDC is doing here.
OhioChick
(23,218 posts)The CDC is going to regret this stance.
LisaL
(47,423 posts)Delta is much more infectious-even highly vaccinated countries are having outbreaks-just look at UK (and Israel). We usually run a month behind UK.
But CDC decided it's time to act as if everything is back to normal.
OhioChick
(23,218 posts)Our CDC used to be the most respected in the world, now....not so much.
I was horrified with their "mask recommendation" a month ago or so and am even more so now.
We don't even have our kids vaccinated, yet.
LisaL
(47,423 posts)UK's delta covid is really spiking and we are usually a month or so behind UK. Seems no doubt we are going to see a spike soon.

And yet mask mandate is removed and people are happily arguing that we don't need masks, or social distancing and can do whatever we want.

And I'm in the middle of redneck hell. I'm always the only one in a mask at grocery store, except employees.

(8,514 posts)I might just do it for the rest of my life.
I went to Walmart yesterday in the afternoon. I usually do things like that in the early morning, but it didn't work out yesterday. I only saw TWO other people wearing a mask inside the store.
That said, I went to my grandson's graduation party on Saturday evening. It was a backyard party, but I did spend some of the time inside too, helping out. I'm reasonably sure that every adult at the party was fully vaccinated, but I'll still be a little on edge about it for a couple of weeks.
Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)They've even mostly stopped wearing masks here in New York where masks were absolutely required to enter any and all businesses until two weeks ago! Now the signs say that masks are only required for those that aren't vaccinated - right...
OhioChick
(23,218 posts)I was against their "mask recommendations" and "honor code" from the beginning, they dropped the ball, big time.
I live in a blue County in OH and barely any are wearing masks here and the Country has no where enough vaccinated for herd immunity, not to mention the kids 12 and under who haven't even been vaccinated, yet. (I heard they're not due to be vaccinated until September-November for Pfizer, if you need the link, I can provide it)

(23,218 posts)Pfizer is advancing Phase 2/3 clinical trials for young kids at lower doses than vaccines for adults, the pharmaceutical company announced Tuesday.
Based on safety, efficacy and tolerability data from Pfizer's Phase 1 trial, the company will use 10 micrograms of each vaccine dose for kids between the ages of 5 and 11 in Phase 2/3 trials, and 3 micrograms of each dose for those 5 and younger. People ages 12 and older received 30 micrograms in each dose.
In addition to studying vaccine safety and side effects in kids, the study will examine antibody response to ensure the vaccine produces enough immunity at lower doses.
The study will include up to 4,500 participants from the United States, Finland, Poland and Spain, according to Pfizer.

(255,525 posts)I have been worried about what would happen when they started school in the fall. Many of the outbreaks that we've seen over the past year started at schools in the region. Even as recently as this spring, they canceled sports and after school activities at a school not far from me because of yet another outbreak there.
And in my county, the age 12+ demographic is up to 71% vaccinated now. When I took my brother to get his second shot back in May, I saw some Moms with young teen kids coming out of the nearby state-run vaccine site - I noticed because a couple of them stopped outside and took photos. (And one kid had half green hair!)
OhioChick
(23,218 posts)They shouldn't be going to school, period.
That's great that you have a 71% vaccinated rate with that age group, now. Most States don't.
I like hearing that parents and kids are proud that they've been vaccinated.

Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)And of course there's no way of knowing. And by requiring everyone to wear a mask every single place, there were no fights or skirmishes that we've seen in other places. By dropping the mandate prematurely, there's no way of shoving the genie back into the bottle, he's out and about for good.
And we have our share of anti vaxxers even here in New York. I know two and I can't see any way of convincing them. One said, early on (when I was so excited that I'd managed to get my first shot!) that we "don't know what's in it" and he wasn't going "to be a guinea pig!" And the other is much older, has to be mid-80s (so he could have been eligible from the beginning), who said that his daughter is a nurse at the hospital and she isn't getting vaccinated and he gets his medical advice from her.
SheltieLover
(80,454 posts)Yes, you are right. Most will not use common sense & revert to wearing masks.
Not that the type of masks people were wearing would do any good against delta.
Over the course of 1.25 years, I think I've seen one other person with a real mask on.
Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)And I know that he's been out of town recently since his younger brother passed away. I have two friends who work at the local hospital and they were the very first I knew who got vaccinated. One has a clerical job and the other works with psych patients in the ER (and she has to be especially protected, wears a gown and has been double masked so tightly that it leaves marks on her face!). They both got a bonus for driving to a major hospital farther downstate to get the Pfizer early this year. I envied them the opportunity. So I don't understand how anyone who works in the hospital (where they just announced 5 new Covid cases!) can walk around not vaccinated!

(5,722 posts)shedding their masks. A week ago almost everyone in the grocery store was still masked, now its about 50/50. We do have a high vaccination rate, only one person in the hosp in the whole county with covid, and a positivity rate of 1%, so were doing well.
We get heavy tourism in the summer though, so hope our numbers can stay down. I dont wear a mask outdoors but do still in stores since Im immuno-compromised and, um, tourists ...
OhioChick
(23,218 posts)The tourists are going to bring it there.... remember Sturgis?

(80,454 posts)Who the hell in their right mind would be going on vacation in the middle of a ppandemic?
Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)Until last week, no one was allowed to enter any local business, grocery, pharmacy, gas station, pet supply store, bank - anywhere at all - without a mask. Even Walmart - which was one of the strictest - had a mask checker at the single entrance. But now the signs say that only those who aren't vaccinated are required to wear masks! Geez! How reliable is that?! It just gives the anti vaxxers an excuse!
And I have the same fears. I'm just south of Lake George, New York, and the tourists show up in crowds from all over. Last year, everything was closed down all summer. But this year everything is "opening up" and they're advertising as such. Yesterday afternoon I drove through the main street that runs through Lake George Village and they're already here, crowds in the streets and traffic backed up - when I stopped for a light, the car in front of me was from Florida!
SheltieLover
(80,454 posts)I cannot imagine going on vacation in the middle of a pandemic.
I really wish the virus could discriminate and only infect those who are so careless.
And what a shame. It sounds like your area was doing so well!
Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)It already looked like it did every previous summer when it's packed for the summer months, big crowds packing the sidewalks and traffic is practically stopped because the throngs are trying to cross the main street - people with kids and strollers, flip flops and shorts. And I never really got the attraction, the lake is beautiful, but other than that, who wants to deal with the crowds and how many souvenirs do you need? It's mostly tee shirts and pizza.
SheltieLover
(80,454 posts)I wouldn't do it. Not now or ever.
Sorry you are subjected to that nonsense, now more than ever.
Are people just that unaware? Or just stupid? Idk.
I guess they don't read. But how could they not, esp when thinking of a vacation at this time?
Is the media covering delta?
Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)I guess they trust what news they hear, that things are now "opening up!" So it must be "safe," right?? Delta has been in the news, but I don't think that most people follow the news as closely as we do here.
SheltieLover
(80,454 posts)What's wrong with them? I know advertisers...
I cannot fathom blind faith that way.
Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)But how many people make it a point to check out the news and really listen? And you're right, it also depends on the source. I can't believe that that these propaganda sites are allowed to persist, disguised as "news." Most of us here remember Walter Cronkite and Huntley and Brinkley. But all that calls itself "news" these days is not equal.

Delta is going to start to spread here, just like it's doing in UK, as far as I can tell- it's already increasing cases in a number of states.

There wasn't a single masked person in the joint!! Not even waitstaff.
And oh my, were we stared at, being masked up! (Folks who are immunocompromised aren't given consideration. Even tho I'm fully vaccinated, I'm not taking a chance.) We should've just walked out.
It turned out to be a restaurant/sports bar full of rethugians, you could tell. (And the food was the worst seafood ever! Online recommendations can't always be trusted.)
