Today is the deadline for phone companies to implement technology to prevent "spoofing" on calls. Caller ID will be verified from it's source using new technologies and protocols.
I am pretty sure that engineers from Moscow to Mumbai have already figured out how to defeat it....

Interestingly, the Indian/Pakistani guys who call you about your Microsoft Windows being at risk seem to have gone underground.

(2,371 posts)And no doubt if I clicked through on the URL in those texts, I'd get some mighty fine push-polling and multiple solicitations for funds to build the wall, suppress urban voting, give the police carte blanche to declare open season on scary brown people, and ensure chain of custody was documented for all women in the state so the state knew which man was legally allowed to make decisions on their behalf.
I don't live in TX, no idea why they think I'm Repub. those texts can stop any time.
Maybe the robocalls trying to get me to helpfully call back to correct the "misperception" that I'm a contractor looking for people who are looking for somebody to do some pressure-washing will stop.

(15,276 posts)And, surprise, surprise, the numbers matched.
So, I googled "Scratch & match" and found I didn't really win $1,000,000.

(42,862 posts)... because we have Ooma and it's configured to ONLY allow known callers to ring through. All others go to voicemail and most robocallers never bother to leave voicemail.

(8,183 posts)I had attributed to a very determined intention on my part to manually block each of these calls, recently. So I'm not sure why.

(24,726 posts)... Apparently I ordered a new iPhone and it will cost $900 or so. I just needed to press "1" to accept the order, or "2" to talk to customer service.
There's another button, one that hangs up the phone.

(19,221 posts)I DID get a congratulatory email telling me that PayPal approved my recent purchase of $518 worth of Bitcoin, but if I think there's some mistake I can just click here to straighten it out. At least it wasn't ye-gods-yet-still-another iPhone from Amazon.

(42,391 posts)I have been diligently blocking every robo-dialed call into my landline for the last 3 or 4 years. Verizon allows me 300 blocked numbers and I'm using most of them.
Even with the blocked numbers I still get tons of spam calls, because the spammers know how to fool the software and grab real numbers from the local calling area. People are afraid to block those numbers because they think maybe it's their neighbors or something. It's not neighbors, it's spoofing spamming robo-dialers. To hell with all of them. I hope they're out of business now, as they should be.

(77,270 posts)And no, we haven't noticed a reduction in robocalls.
The only difference is those numbers don't have (v) after them.
