(115,681 posts)if all you think you're going to extract from the defendants is a fine and a slap on the wrist. If you read between the lines in this indictment, there are other characters and entities involved, including an unindicted co-conspirator; and this grand jury is still sitting - it isn't done yet. Superseding indictments are possible on other charges. This one has to do with tax fraud (and the IRS is likely to have an interest in the same offenses), but other kinds of fraud could be uncovered as well.

to somebody I heard on CNN.
Nobody thinks he will get a 105 year prison sentence, but it is certainly possible he will get SOME time, like Cohen did. And even a year or two would be hard on a 74 year old.

(15,285 posts)indictment experience, court appearances and pre-trial restrictions that go with it. Cohen spent his time in a federal prison camp, not exactly hard time, and tried repeatedly to get released. Imagine if you are 74 yrs old, facing a similar 3 yr sentence and not going to spend it in a cushy federal prison camp, but state prison.

(5,812 posts)Like Chuck Rosenberg said yesterday, prosecutors do indictments one of two ways: Lay out the charges by statutory violations...or...a speaking indictment.
We have here a speaking indictment...which means, they are sending a message to everyone concerned.
Good!

(5,812 posts)Yep, I knew when he had a client that was in major trouble. The indictment went on for pages with FACTS...not just penal code section which were being charged.
I cannot wait until TFG is on the hot seat with one of these.

(5,812 posts)The charging parts of the document are interesting, but not the meat of what is foreshadowed, IMO.
The lead-in....yep, they were all involved in running the scam on taxes.

Come on folks, this is just a minor bookkeeping error. Why are they picking on the Trump team....everybody does it....
