And all day the number one two and three story was the 🐂💩about the indictments. The story that can destroy our democracy was the Supreme court continuing to gut voters rights. That I lose sleep over not TFG and his vile cult members.

(5,931 posts)It's a time-honored tradition stretching back to the B*sh years.
Personally I think TFG is a stroke of genius. No other nickname comes close. It encapsulates the dis of not saying the name, or the title in one fell swoop.

(42,862 posts)Orange one, orange-menace, cheeto, etc... they've all fallen by the wayside. This one will too. But in the meantime, it serves no good purpose and it just makes us look like children.

(42,862 posts)I never called anyone childish. I did, however characterize it being a fairly juvenile response that serves no good purpose. I'd hope that as adults we could discuss adult topics without resorting to incessant defacto name-calling or other "poopy-head" nicknames. That's all I was trying to say. I think that's a reasonable argument to make, don't you?

(50,949 posts)so long. His name was the one most referenced everywhere. Algorithms pick up on that. They use that information to decide what to feed us.
Refraining from writing his name on the internet changes that. When the algorithms see the name less often, they are less likely to conclude that he is all anyone wants to talk about.
I think not using his name is a great idea.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)And if anyone cares: WHY? What difference does it make?
Scrivener7
(50,949 posts)expend the effort to rebut them.
But here's what it boils down to:
If you don't like the nicknames, by all means, you should refrain from using them.
However your insults to and about those that do use them, who often use them for very good reasons, are just obnoxious.
I don't use his name. I get that you, therefore, can't take me seriously. I can happily live with that.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)All I'm trying to say is that if someone is so determined to NOT mention him and NOT talk about him, then why mention him AT ALL? Why mention him even "in code" or by using obscure acronyms, or by using asterisks in his name?
Scrivener7

NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)We should all strive to be better and to elevate the discourse and conversation. These juvenile nicknames and name-calling and "in-crowd" cool-kids in-on-the-joke antics do not achieve that.
All I'm trying to say is that we should strive to be better than this. That's reasonable, don't you think?
Scrivener7
(50,949 posts)That mean's it's stupid! Because I don't like it!"
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)... it just happens that in this case I'm right. My observations don't MAKE them stupid... I'm just telling it like it is. And this is something that's bizarre and serves no good purpose. (Except for the "cool kids" who feel like it's important to part of the "in-crowd" and "in on the joke".)
Good grief. What a waste of time.
All I'm trying to say is that it's time to be adults and elevate the discussion... is there anything wrong with that? That's reasonable, right? Why do things that make liberals and Democrats easy targets for ridicule? Things like this are equivalent to the way that we're called "Lib-tards" and "Demon-crats". It's just juvenile and stupid. Why do it?

(42,862 posts)... this "TFG" silliness is an empty gesture that will have absolutely ZERO meaningful effect on the "algorithms". All this makes as much sense as when DUers want to make a group effort to swarm a website to skew the results of some newspaper's online poll. What difference does it make? It's not important. Who cares? What a waste of time and effort and emotion.
Lord.
Blues Heron
(5,931 posts)call him silly if you want, I think "TFG" was a masterstroke of dis.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)It's a fad. People have glommed onto a throwaway line. It's now overused, meaningless and annoying. It serves no good purpose except to be a stumbling block for topics that could otherwise provide useful information or discussion.
Blues Heron
(5,931 posts)part of that is funny nicknames like Drumpf, Melanoma, Istanka, etc etc. your saying that's all verboten now? We have to use their real names?
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)All I'm trying to say is that it serves no good purpose. Why would anyone want to defend or encourage that type of regressive behavior? Is this a "poopy-head" nickname fad a race to the bottom of the intellectual barrel? I think we can do better than that, wouldn't you agree? That's not unreasonable.
Blues Heron
(5,931 posts)in which case - job well done. Personally I like em all. Remember Commander Codpiece? That one was a brilliant putdown of the former former former guy (TFFFG)

(42,862 posts)All I'm trying to say is that if someone wants to "troll" members of "other boards", then why are they doing it HERE at DU? Wouldn't it make more sense to troll them AT their board? Or by commenting on THEIR tweeter feeds and facebook pages. Why fling poop in one's own house?
Blues Heron
(5,931 posts)collateral benefit if you will, in case any lurkers are reading etc, plus it's fun. People are having fun with it, it's not going to stop, best just skip over the posts with the mean nicknames.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)It's a fad. It's something that a few are glomming onto and, fads are (by definition) an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived and without basis in the object's qualities; a craze.
Blues Heron
(5,931 posts)Sometimes a good nickname has a ring of truth to it like "Commander Codpiece" or "Darth Cheney" (another one that is just pure gold.) Anyway, nicknames are here to stay, the good ones stick around, it's just the nature of the internet.
on edit- don't forget Moscow Mitch loved his nickname "Cocaine Mitch" he even made shirts. Then he clammed up when he was renamed "Moscow Mitch" - he didn't think that was funny at all. No t-shirt for that one! Too close to home. LOL
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)All I'm trying to say is that, people on the other side who try to insult Democrats with terms like "Demoncrats" or "Libtards" or "Sleepy Joe" or "Crooked-Hillary" or "Pocahontas" really aren't all that bright or clever to begin with. What good purpose is served by trying to imitate them?

(9,072 posts)Of course they're going to talk about him all day long. Gee, how did he get elected in 2016? Thank god we didn't learn from any of those mistakes.
Yeah. I'm tired of hearing about him. Yesterday, my conversation with my partner went like so.
P: "Did you see the Trump organization -"
Me: "Don't care."
P: "But they indicted -"
Me: "Really don't care."
P: "I bet Trump -"
Me: "Could not express any harder how much I don't care about the man."
P: "But that one guy -"
Me: "Yeah, yeah, Allen Weisselberg, tax fraud, etc. I read the article. I'm good. So, are we watching Loki tonight?"
I don't need to discuss that shit in my home. I trust competent prosecutors. I trust Biden's DOJ. I voted for Biden specifically so I don't have to think about this shit.
I think obsession with the man is a stress addiction people aren't ready to give up. And the media definitely don't want to give up, because they apparently have nothing else to talk about that people want to watch. Now that they can't use Twitter to drive their "journalism" they're entirely at sea about what interests people.
Loki is just ok. Still not getting into it four episodes in.

(7,278 posts)And the fact that the media is using the indictment story for ratings, while ignoring the SCOTUS is status quo enabling the destruction of our democracy. Something that the Media Executives are quite satisfied with.
The story for the indictments, shouldn't even be about that they finally happened, it should be what the eff took so long, and why wasn't NY Attorney General and Manhattan DA's investigating and charging these criminal enterprises decades ago? That's the story worthy of attention.
But at this precise moment, it's all about our democracy, and the USSC's decision to further destroy it.

(32,685 posts)I'm looking around on DU and I'm wondering to myself--is everyone's head buried in the sand or what? Our democracy is on the ropes and some are more concerned about TFG, infrastructure and primaries. It's time for democrats to FIGHT. I'm so disgusted and disappointed by Manchin, Sinema, and even Schumer--because he's unable to rein them in. At the end of the day, it comes across as weak. There's always an excuse of some kind. Meanwhile, rethuqs don't give a shit--they're ramming their agenda through nationwide.

(16,935 posts)I was thinking today, after all of the vile news, (voting rights gutted, dewine signing an anti-LGTBQ budget, cosby getting out of jail, just examples), that hearing about indictments just isn't enough to lift my spirits.
I want a win for progress. I want the federal government to protect voting rights for all people. I want all of the Ohio r's to stop their revolting and repressive regime in my state. I want rapists to be punished for their crimes.
If, for every indictment that was brought against traitor, an r senator or r judge got booted out of office or off the bench, or one of their crappy laws was repealed and forbidden to come up ever again, I'd feel like Karma was really Karma.
