(115,673 posts)1. Failure of both engines would be really unusual, unless they ingested birds
like the A-320 in the Hudson. Surviving a ditching is also very lucky. Could be that they had a single engine failure right after takeoff and couldn't gain enough altitude to avoid ditching - cargo planes are usually loaded pretty heavily. This wouldn't have been a MAX, it was too old.
