The accident happened at 1:45 a.m. on Friday when Rhoades Aviation Flight T4810 went down about 2 miles south off Kalaeloa Airport, west of Honolulu. The aircraft had taken off from Honolulu International Airport a about 12 minutes earlier.
The pilots had reported engine trouble and were attempting to return to Honolulu when they were forced to land the aircraft in the water, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.
Both crew members were reported to have been rescued by the Coast Guard, but details about their condition were not immediately known. One crew members was airlifted to Queens Medical Center while the other one was brought to shore in a rescue boat.
The aircraft was believed to be operating a flight for Transair, which provides interisland cargo services within the state of Hawaii. It had taken off from Honolulu International Airport for a flight to Kahului Airport on the nearby island of Maui.

Freight airlines are experimenting with autonomous operation so that they can go with one pilot and autonomous/remote operation if the one pilot is incapacitated.
