https://wsvn.com/news/local/crestview-towers-condo-in-north-miami-beach-evacuated-due-to-unsafe-conditions/- The City of North Miami Beach has evacuated a condo building due to unsafe conditions.
The North Miami Beach Building Department ordered the immediate evacuation of the Crestview Towers Condominium due to unsafe structural and electrical conditions.
The evacuation comes after the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo in Surfside and the subsequent push by South Florida municipalities ordering reviews of condominium high rise buildings.
The North Miami Beach Police Department is assisting the condo association with the safe and orderly evacuation of its residents. The City is also working with the American Red Cross to find temporary shelter for displaced residents who do not have somewhere else to stay.

(14,093 posts)who the hell would buy one today? I haven't seen any stories yet on the impact, but there's got to be one.

I read where the the owners at surfside were told again and again as far back as 2019 that the structural damage was significant but owners were unwilling to put the money forward for repairs

(5,554 posts)It's buildings that were not maintained well reaching end of life. This is dependent on design and construction method.
Older structures tended to be masonry and wood frame. My first house was built in 1900, stone foundation and heavy oak framing. With modest maintenance, that house will be standing 100 years from now. Larger structures from that time period tended to be masonry; look at all the old industrial buildings being repurposed as their bones are good.
The switch to poured concrete, lightweight framing, and post pensioned slabs puts more of an expiration date on newer structures. We're starting to reach that with poorly maintained examples.
I imagine a comprehensive inspection program nationwide would find thousands in need of urgent overhaul or condemnation. If that were to happen, think of the impact on the already tight housing market...

(10,885 posts)Residents of a North Miami Beach condominium complex are being evacuated after building inspectors warned of structural issues, CBS Miami reports. The order by authorities in North Miami Beach to close the 156-unit Crestview Towers Condominium comes just over a week after a condo in nearby Surfside partially collapsed
