We drove 500 miles to a place where we thought we were safe and guess what? the fuckers are blowing their wads off everywhere

It is totally beyond me that idiots are willing to spend big bucks to blow their money up

Until the Federal Govt makes it illegal to sell fireworks on the reservations this will never stop and every year how many thousands of pets and people are traumatized and lost.

We tried for two years to go to Canada and again the border was closed. So here we are drugging our pets into oblivion. This country gets sicker all the time.

We need vaccine passports, or something that shows proof of vaccination and is not easily forged like a handwritten card.

Without that, I can't blame Canada for wanting to keep us out. It sucks, but I really can't blame them.

From the time I was a child til about 24 years old. I was one of those who would blow a wad of money on fireworks. I remember I spent over 800 dollars one year. ...to soak them. Gunpowder & smokeless powder are safe for disposal when soaked through with water.
It's safe to do, too. Once the ordinance is in the water, sparks or friction become irrelevant.
This doesn't work for many explosive, but for low explosive powders, this is how most experts were handle them.

A few weeks before every Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve, the roadside tents pop up selling them.

Honestly, I think that they are disgusting now, but when I was a kid, I bought sparklers, firecrackers and hard impact explosives called blasters (or cherry bombs) from a nearby convenience store.

I can't stand fireworks either.

I think a professional show can be pretty, but I absolutely HATE the noise. I am what you would call an HSP (highly sensitive person - and yes, it's a thing. There are books written about it.), so loud noises, bright lights, large crowds, too much of anything, really stresses me out and I need to get away. Some of us just have very hypersensitive nervous systems.

A lot of people don't understand it unless they are the same way, but it's really difficult for some of us to put up with and we have to go and hide away somewhere quiet, peaceful, dark and dim.

I really enjoyed them because I really always thought there was always something wrong with me until I realized that some of us are just HSPs and and process sensory stimuli differently.

If people aren't like us, they don't get it and think it's something totally made up, but they have no idea what it is like to be in our skin. I think there are probably a lot more of us here because we tend to be empathetic and compassionate. Exactly the opposite of what republicans are.

I have a sister and some nieces who are also HSPs. We grew up thinking there was something wrong with us, too, so I definitely relate to what you're saying. I learned that 20% of humans (and also animals) fit into the highly sensitive category. That's around 1in 5 people. I would think that DU has a number of HSPs. It helped me a lot to learn as much as I could about the subject.

I agree with you about being highly empathic and compassionate. I was always that way, even as a child. I care about people very deeply. I never could understand people who are uncaring, arrogant, or cruel. The four Trump years were extremely traumatizing for me. I am so glad we dont have to deal with him now. I adore President Biden!

Hope you have a lovely July 4th holiday, smirkymonkey!

Fireworks are being set off in our neighborhood as I sit here right now and I am on edge. I do not care for crowds one bit. Loud noises startle me. i feel the way you do about cars and motorcycles. When I was a little girl my stepfather would take our family to these races with two cars that were really, really long in front; he called those cars "rails.". They would sit and rev their engines while waiting for a light in front of them to turn green and they would take off and go super fast down the track until little parachutes came out of the back of the cars to help them slow down. I have never heard anything so loud in my life as those cars. Those days were miserable for me, honestly. The hot California sun, the smells of gas and oil and car exhaust, the boredom of sitting for hours as he indulged his hobby with very little thought of any of us four kids, and the excruciatingly loud noise.....well, it was a special kind of torment, really.

I am happy to know that I have friends at DU who can understand what it is like to be highly sensitive.

Sat Jul 3, 2021, 02:36 AM

I've got a creek across the street, and they head down there to shoot these things off. I'm not talking even a packet of Black Cats. I'm talking bottle rockets and M80's, as well as the whistlers. I wanted to see if they were at the creek, or if they were in a backyard. I must have met at least half the block doing the same walk. Not that it mattered to the kids, to whom I was not very gracious. I have a 2-y.o. pony of a puppy who has been terrified every night for the last two weeks... that's how long these kids have been doing this around here. I've got bottle rocket debris landing on the car parked at the side of my house!

We've called the cops twice, and I'd lay odds we're not the only ones who've done it. But the kids disappear when they show up. It's infuriating! Coming back down the block towards my house, I had the thought I'd turned into the old lady yelling "get off my lawn"... but while I always liked public fireworks displays, I never really cared for more than a sparkler or a fountain in our backyard. Guess money was always too tight to be thinking about sending it all up in smoke!

But seeing my poor baby so upset... grrrr. I did make her a special "hot toddy" tonight, and it did seem to help some. Warmed 2/3 of a cup of Lactaid milk (dogs can be lactose intolerant, as I am!), combined with a teaspoon of sugar and a half capful of vanilla in the microwave until a little warmer than tepid. It even smelled good to me! (LOL) She lapped it up, and then laid down on my lap on the couch in the family room to watch tv. I could hear her sigh and fall asleep as I was stroking the side of her face and the back of her head. She'd let out a half-bark as a firecracker went off, and then lay her head back down and go back to sleep. She's sleeping like a baby right now, some hours later.

Word to those with anxious, barking, scared puppies... this "hot toddy" really works on this hound dog! He's 77 pounds of pure bliss right now! I call the concoction "Lexie's Toddy" (LOL)

Funny, but my cats are perfectly content in the house; they're not bothered at all by the noise, only Lexie's barking at it!

They used to be illegal here in IA. One of the many dumbazz laws reynolds passed for which nobody was clamoring. A bunch of cities have overridden it and outlawed them again b/c people and pets hate the noise. Of course it doesn’t affect Covidkim and her donor class. Nobody’s lighting them off where they live.

regarding fireworks. We have some people who have a huge display every year and announced their intention to have fireworks this year and the time they planned to do it. There are others who say they have PTSD or who have animals that require tranquilizers to stay calm during the display. Several of the fireworks people said their intention is to do the display on Sunday evening.

Imagine my surprise when someone began setting off loud explosions after 10 p.m. tonight. I’m sure the anti-fireworks people will be livid. The discussion board will be lit up with folks arguing about the fireworks.

I’m not wild about fireworks but if they don’t set them off for two hours or after 10 p.m. I guess it is ok. But setting them off on any day other than the holiday seems to be childish and just trying to start trouble with their neighbors.

Florida’s laws have changed and fireworks on certain holidays are legal with some limitations such as size of the fireworks and the time they’re set off. Too bad people can’t be halfway decent about this with little or no regard for others and what can be a serious issue.

I have never had an animal I raised even slightly bothered by them or thunder, though.

In fact, I once lived across the street from a dirt track speedway. They did fireworks every Saturday night during the racing season. We had a fat gray tabby at the time who would sit on the porch railing and watch them.

I was in a relationship with someone who had a Jack Russell his previous gf had raised. That dog was not so much afraid of thunder and fireworks as wanting to find the noise and kill it.

Poor Zeus Dog was loosing his mind - as well as me because if Zeus is up digging at the carpet and begging to go into the sewing room, you know I am up, too. For some reason Zeus feels safe in my sewing room. Maybe it is the smaller space, the radio and sewing machine for background noise. I have special no brainer projects just for these middle of night sewing sessions. I sew until the nervous dog has stopped panting and is peacefully sleeping. Then I slip out and go back to bed myself. This is our MO during thunderstorms too

The clowns setting off fireworks - the teenagers across the street - bless their little still undeveloped brains. Actually they are really good kids and will do just about anything for me if I need extra muscle power, etc. so you know I am not going to fuss at them. I don’t want to be “that” cranky neighbor

The best is yet to come - our community’s annual 4th of July fireworks show is basically in my back yard. Zeus and I go upstairs, I shut the doors and windows, again turn on the radio and give my sweet Zeus a soothing massage. Treats are close by. I haven’t seen fireworks for 10 years…

I don't buy them, but it's been two nights of pretty high-quality low-flying fireworks, one night at a park and another I could see right out the window.

I've never understood the yearly need for folks to whinge and "GET OFF MY LAWN!" over fireworks. It's a few days/nights out of the year, you'll live. Next we'll have folk complaining that Christmas Lights are an assault on their senses and Trick'o'Treaters should be arrested for disturbing the peace.

Here in North Hollywood. It sucks but it’s the reality of life in a big city like LA.

Except maybe Christmas. My songs don’t bat an eye and aren’t bothered by them. I realize this isn’t the case for everyone though.

It's been pretty quiet so far today but it will start up again later.

These yahoos have no idea what the 4th is celebrating. They just think it's an excuse to go crazy with fireworks.

60. We've been dealing with the noise nearly every day for 2 weeks

The professional displays don't bother me so much as the rude assholes setting them off all night long. My poor dog was so frightened tonight he refused to go outside to do his business and he has the runs. At least the noise stopped a half hour ago. Last week they were setting off professional grade fireworks directly over our houses.
