(111,255 posts)is the water dependedent farming in southern Arizona. The river and reservoirs are about dry and previous groundwater pumping has led to subsidence and massive cracks that now threaten homes and businesses. Farmers say this year they will have to pump even more out of the aquifer. I'm afraid the SW is going to have to adapt--a lot--to increased desertification.

(10,828 posts)Jimmy Carter tried to warn us. The majority laughed and scoffed. The fossil fuel industry has hidden the evidence for decades. They knew. Many knew but were unwilling to give up continuing profits to make the necessary environmental changes to stabilize what's been brewing for the last 50 years.
Now we're seeing, experiencing clear evidence of what's coming down the pike. And still people deny it, those on the right most of all because their perks and power are intimately tied to industry.
If we don't at least try to mitigate and prepare for the worst, we'll all be part of a mass suicide event. It's that serious, as I'm sure you're well aware.
And yes, I am furious at the GOP for their continued refusal to admit what's happening, right now under our very noses, within everyone's eyesight and sensibility.
The Earth, our nest and only home is being ravaged by Climate Change. No wonder the billionaires are desperately attempting to get off planet, go to Mars, set up their own space stations.
And still the deniers hum their silly, disgusting song which in reality is a Swan Song. To the detriment of every living thing on the planet.

(215 posts)Some clueless and inconsiderate types proposed appropriating some land in NE Kansas for use as a reservoir for water from the Missouri River. The water would have then been transferred to SW Kansas to water the corn crops there. Property would have had to been taken over for an aqueduct that would cross crop land, state and interstate highways. Several pumping stations would have been required to overcome the rise in elevation. The potential for a 30% loss of water during transfer caused some heads to rattle.

Fortunately, calmer heads and a lack of reliable funding collapsed the idea for the present.

(6,593 posts)You have to wonder about the environmental impact of doing big construction projects
like this one.
North Texas just completed a new Lake Bois DArc for water supplies in North Texas.
It is the first one built for 30 years.
Just a fascinating project that happened pretty quick for Texas.

(12,165 posts)of thirst, apparently.
And desalinization is not a panacea. While it may be possible to come up with a technology to create enough drinking water from sea water for a city the size of Los Angeles, the resources it would take to run the system would create more pollution. Desalinization at that scale has never been done, though.
Plus, the city would need a new system of plumbing where drinking water isnt wasted for flushing toilets.

If we were as incompetent at our jobs as our elected representatives seem to be, we'd be gone, gone, gone, in short order without any commissions or panels appointed to keep us on payroll.
WTF?
