First there was a problem with Juneteenth. Now theres a problem with Vanessa Williams singing Lift Every Voice, on Independence Day because its nicknamed the Black National Anthem. Seems like the Right is the only side that consistantly has a problem with Black stuff.

What makes 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' so iconic
For more than a century, Lift Every Voice and Sing has held a powerful place in American history. The hymn is known as the Black National Anthem, but its more than that. Its a history lesson, a rallying cry, a pledge of unity, and as people gather to fight for equality and justice, it is an ever-present refrain.

(3,730 posts)We never learned to chill. We never had to. Weve always had the privilege of being angry, indignant, and arrogant.

(34,062 posts)For 11 years I taught in a high school where this was the only national anthem sung. So much preferable than the one I try to avoid hearing since then.

Hope that acknowledges so much persecution, heartache, and struggle - and miraculously still persists.

(21,431 posts)I have heard it sung in the church of an all white congregation, but not with all the verses. Thank you for posting it.

(90,644 posts)They are a minority, never forget that; but they are also dangerous, for all the reasons we learned from 2016 through today.
Thats the best way I can put it in the moment. Just remember: these hollow people are a minority in this country.

(1,722 posts)They have a sad way of life living in fear - they need guns, they need to please God, they need to hang out with people who agree with them, they need politicians who sound like their preachers, they need to build a wall, they need gated communities, they fear "Liberals," they are easily frightened by crazy conspiracy claims, etc., etc. They fear science. And education.
I've been there (not 100%). Not living in fear would be a whole new world for them, but it would take quite a lot of courage to break the fear. Or perhaps a serious dose of reality.

(32,633 posts)My only regret is that it's hard to sing. If this were an easier hymn maybe more white people could learn it and sing along with blacks.

Perhaps it's the broken clock theory, but hard pass coming from him.
