KCMO. It's awful here. It's been bad since about 4 pm.
My head is splitting and I am contemplating killing my neighbors. Fortunately I have no weapons.
Why can't we cancel the 4th? It has turned into a nightmare.

(46,301 posts)They had one helluva 45 minute "display" tonight.
Fortunately I kept my doors closed and the A/C on, so it wasn't loud enough to bother my two cats.
(As is, my calico "Charlotte" isn't bugged at all by loud thunder either.)

(50,276 posts)Multiple fireworks going on per second as far as the ear can hear what a colossal waste of money is all I can think! Fortunately the AC is on which means closed windows; the critters are managing pretty well

(32,653 posts)is it even safe to go to bed with all these fireworks going off near trees and my roof? I feel like I should at least gather up an emergency outfit and overnight bag. SMH.

(18,866 posts)And it's still full of smoke. It's getting hard to breathe.
I am hoping most people will stop by 11.
My dogs are drugged up and they are asleep. I haven't been able to get them out since about 3.
This stuff is expensive. I live in a poorer neighborhood and I don't understand how these people can afford to just waste money like this.

When I moved here, I thought Denver would have laws against people blowing off fireworks in their front and back yards, but no.

(48,917 posts)fine -- but I've been hearing private fireworks set off illegally for a couple of weeks now, and they'll be illegal again after the two days this weekend, but I'll probably be hearing them for another couple of weeks, especially from the sadists who like to set them off at 2 in the morning.

The problem is that the small towns around here all sell fireworks. They would have to outlaw fireworks in Missouri and Kansas in order to control it.

And THAT is why I never vote to increase funding for police.

I understand the public displays. They are beautiful. But this stuff just goes boom and that's it.
Tomorrow in the news there will be houses that burned down and children that lost eyes and fingers.
People also shoot guns into the air so there will probably be a couple of dead people.

(11,949 posts)And there were a ton in and around my neighborhood. Surprisingly, around 9:30 they all pretty much stopped. Ill chalk it up to considerate neighbors. Which is surprising.
Our cat pays them no mind. I wonder if pets in Florida, hearing so much thunder are less prone to stressing about them? Because none of my neighbors dogs are bothered. And while fireworks are loud, our daily thunderstorms shake the house. When lightening hits a few hundred yards away it is loud. Real loud. And earlier this week a neighbors palm tree was hit. The sound in our house would have waked the dead.
As a kid I used to bird hunt. And I know you can train both dogs and horses not to freak out about gunshots. Its been over 45 years, but I think my uncle would shoot then give the puppy a treat. Did not take long until a gunshot was associated with positive results. Unfortunately I cant ask him.

My house is indeed shaking. I am fine with people shooting off LEGAL fireworks. I'm not okay with people breaking the law and endangering innocent people and their property with the illegal crap.
Doc Sportello
(7,488 posts)But they're "celebrating" the founding of our country with adult males shooting off fireworks like they're 12, while getting drunk, and wearing their cheap ass stars and stripes shirt. I had to put my dog in the car and drive around for 45 minutes until the main fireworks show, which is near my place, ended. Now the morons are setting off their personal ones. I'd like to ask if any of them know who their congress person is, or the president, or anything about the origins of this country. They don't know.
I have come to fucking hate this holiday. It has become as big a display of bullshit from its original intent at Christmas.
leftyladyfrommo
(18,866 posts)It's just an excuse to set off fireworks. And get drunk.
I hate it with a passion.
Two of my dogs are really old and one has epilepsy. They really don't need this.

(1,425 posts)He's a 100 lb. German Shepherd mix. He chewed himself bloody during the air show earlier this summer. We have a Naval Air Station here, so the Blue Angels fly. Our house is directly under one of the flight paths. After that, the vet gave us a mild sedative to administer before the 4th of July and New Year's Eve.
We gave Roscoe the medication and put on his ThunderShirt about 7 pm. He was sawing logs by 7:45. About 8:30, the neighborhood fireworks started. The first bang woke him up and we spent the next 2 hours taking turns sitting with him as he staggered between both bathrooms, the kitchen, the living room, and the bedrooms. The assholes finally decided to quit about 11:00. I live within the city limits where shooting fireworks is illegal.
I hate the 4th of July and New Year's Eve. We can't do anything other than brace ourselves for hours of misery. Roscoe is terrified and we do nothing but sit with him in whatever room he thinks is safe at the time.

At least in my senior mobile home park fireworks are prohibited and they sent out a notice that they will evict any one who lights fireworks. But the professional city display is less than a mile away. They cancelled it last year so at least we had a break.

(111,169 posts)I hear you about the weapons, not that I'd be able to aim anything with my lousy eyesight. I do fantasize about spraying the area with a full auto, just to get a little peace and quiet before the cops show up to drag me away.
Little kids and their cases of arrested development daddies love this holiday. I'd like to see anybody shooting them off before or after the holiday and after 10 PM hit with a hefty fine for every firecracker the cops find in their possession.
Some guys in my 'hood would be paying it off for many years, unable to afford illegal fireworks for the duration.
Fortunately, we've had a little light rain, so the neighborhood is now too damp to burn.
Still, I want it OVER. You know, like Xmas is over at 3 PM. Everybody's cranky and there's a let down and nobody wants to see it again for at least a full year.

(1,040 posts)Fireworks are banned in Olathe, but you wouldn't know it. My hubs made the mistake of taking Chloe the Wonder Dachshund out for a walk just as the sun was setting. She came back panting and in obvious distress. I swear someone was shooting off mortars less than a block away. For grins I turned on our local Broadcastify police scanner channel and a good 80% of the calls were firework complaints, including at least two that had set houses on fire. Police were giving first warnings, but a few went on callbacks and citations were issued. I can't imagine how bad it would be if they were legal here. I think they finally stopped about midnight. But of course, there will be leftovers for the next couple of days.
