1. Used to be illegal, but now legal with some hour restrictions.

Fortunately, 4th and New Year are about only times they are exploded.

Used to shoot them on farms and dirt roads, but I was 12 or 13. Not really interested after that.

6. I have no idea about the legality locally, but we are in catastrophic drought conditions

here in northern New Mexico. I've been listening to fireworks for three hours now, as well as the past several days and probably the next several.

I did call the local police about an hour ago, and was told they are patrolling and warning citizens about the current fireworks ban. Well, no cops showed up in my neighborhood, and I guess I should be happy that no fires seem to have been started. I'm furious at the carelessness of my neighbors. They're apparently blissfully unaware of the drought and the danger of what they are doing.

I also have a cat, adopted last year, who is terrified of the firework noises. She's not cuddly or affectionate, and so it's almost impossible to soothe her right now. I know lots of other DUers have cats or dogs who are likewise terrified of the fireworks.

I did write a letter to the editor of my local newspaper about a half hour ago. It will be interesting to see if it shows up in tomorrow's print edition. And yes, I subscribe to the local newspaper. I have on friend here who makes fun of me for that, but without it there's a lot of things I'd know nothing about. Hooray for local newspapers!

7. In reference to your neighbors

I feel like they're showing what big asses they really are. It's truly just sheer selfishness. They have complete disregard for vets with PTSD, animals, and people who need to go to work in the morning.

8. I am VERY tempted to print out a note and put it in every door

in my small neighborhood. Not sure if I'll do it -- and I'd want to put them in late at night (I don't do mornings) so as to fly under the radar.

It really is selfishness. We are in severe drought here, and they should know that. And if they don't, well too bad. Ignorance is no excuse.

My cat is apprehensive, but not as freaked out as she was about three days ago. Which is interesting. She must be getting a bit used to the noise. And here's what's more interesting: I have my home cleaned by Merry Maids every other week. My cat is completely unaffected by the vacuum cleaner. In fact, she's totally fascinated by the cleaners and all their equipment and is sort of a mascot for them. Merry Maids is wonderful. I am so grateful I can afford them, because I do not like doing house cleaning, am not at all good at it, but prefer to live in a clean home. Hence, Merry Maids.

The city sounds like a warzone every year, and seems to get worse every year. After last year's embarrassment (where we even had enforcement blow it off with "They need to blow off steam after being inside the last few months&quot , the city and the county vowed to "crack down" on it. But tonight was worse than a year ago.

I'm in Southern California, so, it's hot and drier than hell, and even that hasn't deterred it. As you (and Rorey downthread) both said, it's selfishness. That's totally what it is. No consideration for the sound, the smell, the smoke, the fire hazard, or what it does for nerves - of animals or people. They get off on blowing shit up, and we have to sit and hear and smell it, all night.

Worse, they don't get it. They just don't get it. The local PD put up on their Facebook page that "fireworks are illegal". Not only does that get blown off, but we had people who had the nerve to reply "How can they be illegal in a free country?" That's exactly how these Maurice Rons think. "It's a free country! I can do whatever I want! Freedumbs!"

Not to mention that we know many of the more obnoxious people "celebrating" the 4th hate this country, as we can see by how they view women, POC's, LGBTQ's, liberals, etc. They don't love this country. They just love themselves.

Not helping my mood is that usually my roommate and I try to get the hell out of here and find a quiet place to eat, taking advantage of double-pane glass and all that. No such luck. Six miles of walking (round-trip) to find absolutely nothing open. Not even the damned Denny's, which now closes at 9 pm here.

Honestly, I am just so tired of the selfishness and lack of consideration so many have on this day. The same selfishness and stupidity that got us That Fucking Guy for 4 years.

13. Denver Post ran an article a few years ago about many ordinances banning them along front range

Some dating back as long as 50 years (Fort Collins, for example).

While drought conditions have improved in areas from Pueblo to the Wyoming border along I-25, the rest of the state is one bright red fire zone. But, of course, a fire can start anywhere.

I don't get why people would risk it. But, setting them off in streets or parking lots right near cars or people's front doors is insane-- as the apparent chosen alternative.

14. Legal, but regulated by date and time

Not that its enforced much. Some cities do, most others ignore it. They were legalized in 2012 if I remember right. Prior to that, anything that exploded or went into the air was illegal. That was laughably unenforced though. Michigan residents would flock to Ohio to buy them. Party stores and others would buy them in bulk and sell them illegally from the backroom or out of their houses. Unless someone got hurt or they were being used at 2am, cops would ignore calls about them. I think the typical response was "we'll send a car out after the emergency calls are taken care of" which translates to "we are never showing up."

15. I have happy memories of going to the fireworks in my town and later setting off our

own with neighbors when I was a child....careful adult supervision of course. We set off fireworks with our own kids even now...and are very careful. We don't have a drought here, and there is no risk of fire. They are not legal here but, there is no enforcement. Personally, I think there is much overreaction here about fireworks. It is the fourth of July, folks. And my dogs are fine. I have two Poms and one Jack Russell.
