Columbus Blue Jackets goalie dies after fireworks-related Fourth of July fall

Holy Moley!!!

****************************************

Kivlenieks and several others were in a hot tub in Novi, Mich., when a mortar-style firework misfired and they scrambled away, Novi Police Lt. Jason Meier told the Associated Press. Kivlenieks slipped and fell, apparently striking his head on concrete, Meier told the Detroit News.

1. Turns out it was the damn fireworks mortar blast that killed him.

This is heartbreaking, and even more so, given that it was looking like he was on the verge of a career breakthrough.

I'm getting to the point where I want fireworks banned in the hands of non-professionals. Between stuff like this, and knowing how they terrify pets and wildlife, I'm sick of hearing these stories. But, I don't see it happening.

Close range mortar blast to the chest.
I agree with the needlessness of these accidents.
After helping dispose of obsolete ordinance in the decommissioning of an arsenal, fireworks no longer impress me.
70% of the power, 25% of the rate of decomposition. The dazzle is gone.
But, it's still a lot of energy per unit mass, and best left in the hands of experts.
We had over 2.5 hours of boom around here last night. I'm literally talking about 5 - 8 bursts per minute for 150 minutes. Had to be a thousand bursts, going on until nearly 11:30pm.
Too many hillrods, too much beer, and explosives. What could go wrong?

8. I love the big displays, like the one they had at the Capitol last night.

That they can make "Saturn," and hearts, and smiley faces, and the like out of fireworks never ceases to amaze me. But, the stuff they sell at fireworks stands is joke. I guess some people just like blowing up stuff.

I guess I would dig seeing something like that on TV.
I don't need the boom to dig the shapes & colors.

3. It seems like local law enforcement has turned a blind eye to this growing problem.

We went out last night to a place that has an elevated view of 5 or 6 different cities, from downtown Cleveland eastward. The number of amateur fireworks displays going off was literally shocking. There were hundreds of mortars being fired. The noise ranged from sharp cracks to distant rumbling. This went on nonstop the half hour we stayed and was still going strong when we left.

On the way home, on a side street near our house, teenagers had commandeered the middle of the street to stage their fireworks display. There was a large pile of spent shells and debris we had to maneuver around to go past. When I called the non-emergency PD number the woman who answered sounded tired and said she'd send a car.

6. Yeah, that's the case where I live, too.

Here in South Carolina, they're legal, but my city has an ordinance that bans them. It's never enforced. We have the same noise and trash problems as a result

BTW, this death occurred in a suburb of Detroit. Looks like law enforcement looks away there, as well.

5. Yeah, it's illegal to use them in my town, too.

But, these assholes shoot them off every chance they get. The 4th of July, New Year's Eve, Christmas...you name it. And, the days leading up to them. They're legal in the state, which is probably why the city ordinance doesn't get enforced.

Shooting in the air but towards residential areas. People can say FTP/ACAB all they want, but I’m glad they were taking these morons off the streets.
