Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAlmost everyone in the supermarket today was masked. Only a few days ago, I noticed fewer masks.
I wonder what happened. I was masked (too tired and lazy to do much primping which at this point in my life is just trying to cover the circles under my eyes).
It was strange. Do you think people are going back to masks out of renewed fears about Covid?

(16,170 posts)And it was very strict. I saw a guy tossed out of the grocery store because he refused to wear one properly.
Now the sign on the door specifies that "fully vaccinated don't need to wear a mask". But I don't trust people (we have a lot of anti-vaxxers here) so I just choose to wear one all the time.

(68,478 posts)I thought at the time it was real progress. A few days later and it's "no mask? It's all good..."

(131 posts)I am fully vaccinated and due to surgery on my head a few weeks ago am unable to wear a mask. I don't worry about it anymore. My wife and daughter still wear masks even though they are also fully vaccinated. I wonder if it's a gender thing. Guys less likely to wear masks if they don't have too.

(54,332 posts)to wear a full face mask. LOL. My grocery store has been running about 50/50. I'm vaccinated, but still wear one unless there are few people in the store.

(6,674 posts)Only myself, a handful of customers I passed and a few of the people working there were wearing masks. But, even the majority of workers were mask-less. So, there's definitely no resurgence of mask wearing around there parts. Yet, any way. Hope springs eternal.

(38,824 posts)Fauci said vaccinated people should mask in areas with low vaccine rates.
Delta is 60% more contagious than the initial variant.
Cases in the US have increased steadily for the last 3-4 weeks, after declining until shortly after the CDC said to unmask.
mRNA have a decreased effectiveness against Delta - which give an effective effectivenes (compared to pre-Delta expoures) of ony 80.2 (so expect 19.2 breakthrough case of Delta for the same exposure that would have previously created 5).
I hope people are finally waking up to the reality that - while good - vaccines are not 100% effective, and additional layers of protection are important for a reasonable level of safety until vaccination reaches a level sufficient to create herd immunity (and turn off the variant factory that currently exists).

(131 posts)Even though I am fully vaccinated, do I put you at risk by not wearing a mask since you suffer from cancer?
Ms. Toad
(38,824 posts)Even though I have cancer, I am currently NED (No evidence of disease) so my body is not actively (as far as we know) fighting cancer. I have a manual check-up every 3 months to confirm that the sarcoma is not regrowing locally (which would require more surgery or amputation) and radiation - and any lumps and bumps that develop between visits can trigger more scans or treatment sooner than 3 months. (I had one scare at 4 months post-diagnosis, which required intermetiate scans.) I also have lung scans every 3 months because the lungs are where the cancer will metastasize to.
Although I have not had antibody tests to confirm a normal immune response, I was not on immune-suppressing treatment at the time I was vaccinated (so I should have developed an immune response similar to someone of my age who doesn't have cancer). I am not currently on immune suppressing treatment (although if metastasis occurs I will be, with very little notice, because the cancer is so aggressive. I was diagnosed on December 4, and the first surgery took place on December 15. I would expect chemo on a similar time frame if lung mets are diagnosed.
So the risk you pose to me ** assuming the sarcoma continues to behave ** is largely the same that you pose to anyone else: That you develop COVID as a breakthrough case - and pass that on to me - which might, in turn, cause me to become a breakthrough case. The slight increased risk to me (beyond that to the general public) is that if you expose me and I am diagnosed with lung mets while I am still within the window of exposure from you the chemo-related immune suppression would make it harder for my body to fight back.
You do pose a greater risk to cancer patients who are on cancer treatments that suppress the immune system - either at the time of vaccination (so their immunity is not fully developed) or were put on it after vaccination and their bodies can't muster the immune response despite having the tools.

(8,514 posts)I just came from the store and only saw two other customers wearing masks, plus a few employees. I'm fully vaccinated, but I feel better about my own safety when I have a mask on.

(5,803 posts)I'm in NY, where the vaccination rate is close to 70%, but there is no way everyone there was vaccinated. None.
One guy was wearing a shirt that said "Florida. Open for business the entire time. Think he's vaccinated? I kind of doubt it.

(7,080 posts)today I went to a Ross and a Marshall's. I would say only 15% of the people had masks on. I was disgusted and am in no hurry to do any more shopping.

(15,359 posts)Yeah. We're probably lucky it's that high. I was backing off a bit on my lockdown. I would now make a quick store run in between my weekly Walmart pickup. I go near a little mom and pop on my morning walks, so I go in there for odds and ends. I even though no big deal if I forget to bring a mask since it's real early and no one is in there.
Nope. Back to the masks and no breaking the rule even if it's a pain in the ass. I may go back to full hermit mode again if it gets ugly.
